I am considering going back to college and re-training as a hairdresser/barber-would I get help as an 'adult student'?
Where do I look?
What do I do?
ok - I think I can help
If it is the same as where I am (and obviously it might be different as there are no set rules), we do the NVQ level 2 in hairdressing. It's a 2 year course, attending a couple of sessions a week. Full fee for us is £1250 but if you are on any kind of means tested benefits (ie WTC) you will get the concessionary fee, which for us is around £170. We then have a 'learner support' fund where if the household income is under £15,276 and the course is accredited (which it would be), you can have £350 per year for course fees, equipment (which would include a uniform/scissors etc) and also childcare creche fees if applicable.
You will need to look at your local futher education college and your local adult learning provider.
Courses start September and will be filling up at the moment. We have a 12 week pre-requisite course which is a piece of pish to be honest but it sorts out those who want to do the NVQ from those who just fancy it (and would probably drop out). You'd be fully qualified at the end. Lots of learners then go mobile, I know of 2 with their own salons within a year of qualifying.
If you want to do it - go for it"Stay Wonky":D

okey dokey. We do the ITEC Diploma. Everywhere will be different, but we start with Anatomy and Physiology as the first course and then build units after that. It depends on what you want to do (ie Man and Ped/Waxing/Massage etc) but you can shape the Diploma through the choices. Some are mandatory but some you choose.
Will probably take a couple of years with doing a couple of courses at a time to get your qualification.
Again, as it's accredited, there should be help for low income households.
The only thing I would say is that Scott's income will be used as part of the calculation."Stay Wonky":D

Just had a call from one of the girls I worked with-they aren't filling my position and the sales team are all now working together as one due to the station changes-so really was a last in, first out scenerio. I am starting to get a bit angry because I really had only been there 3 months-not nearly long enough to get things rolling. I also know that all my work I HAD put in will start to pay dividends now and someone else will benefit.
Anyway-not much I can say about it is there?Empty pockets never held anyone back, only empty heads and empty hearts can do that -Peale0 -
really is unfair Bunny. It's as if you've been used
3 months ago when they took you on, the economy was as bad then as now. They must surely have factored in the lack of revenue versus taking you on and decided they needed to fill the vacancy even with reduced income.

talking of beauty treatments and qualifications I've been very brave and found and booked a waxer next week.......
I said 'I've never done it before because I'm not slim' and she said 'so? Doesn't matter. I'm a size 16 and have ladies of all shapes and sizes'
She works from home and it's only a couple of minutes away. She was really lovely so I'm nervous but also a bit excited about facing something I've always wanted to have done.
