I would not expect to get a deposit back and would not have the brass neck to even ask..

Do you know what a deposit is? Why should the garage gove the money back?

Deposits should only be left when the deal is concluded. The OP has agreed to buy the car. Whatever happened to my word is my bond.

yes I know what a deposit is, do you know what a gesture of goodwill is ? And the op verbally agreed to buy, nothing on paper to buy, so should get his money back, regardless what you think if he has paid by credit card he should do a charge back if not refunded imo . Garages don't have some divine right to hold onto your money unless there is a signed agreement to do so.

Do you really need to ask what kind of people run parking companies?

Why not, that is called a verbal agreement. A handshake should be good enough.

You also suggest the the garage should give the deposit back as a gesture of goodwill, why?

If there was any gooodwill then the garage wouldn't need to ask for a deposit if potential buyers stuck by their word.

Same here, worrying, but on this occasion I am on the side of the dealer.

Obviously they play by different rules in Wales.

Why should the OP lose his deposit when he has nothing in writing from the garage? Its the car dealers problem if they don't operate properly, basically its tough luck on them for making a fundamental mistake when they took the deposit from him. As said if they don't refund and paid for by credit card I would do a charge back, refunding before this happens will hold the garage in good stead by the OP when he is ready to proceed with the car!

And Inactive don't bring nationality into the discussion, doing so demeans your point, and borders on being racist as being Welsh has sod all to do with this at all!

Not in law I believe, the garage has no right to withhold the deposit because they have nothing in writing, don't defend the garage in this case, because they have made a mistake, most of them wouldn't have any compunction in taking you for a ride.

Have no idea on the rules and the law, but my gut instinct is that you pay a deposit to secure an item. If you change your mind then you forfeit the deposit.

What would be the point of the garage taking a refundable deposit?

That's the point, they didn't indicate that the deposit was not refundable should the OP not proceed, nor have they put it in writing, really for a business that sells cars surely that is fundamental ?

I never mentioned the " Welsh " I said that they " play by different rules in Wales ", that does not mean only the Welsh do things differently.

So what is the point of deposits then?

They are to secure an item and remove it from sale, in my book.

What is the point of a deposit if it was refundable?

How many times on here do we see this. Let me put it in big letters.

Don't leave a deposit unless you are prepared to finalise the deal

If you are not sure then ask the garage for 24 (or whatever) hours without a deposit. If that is not possible the walk away.

But if you agree a purchase be a person of your word and don't try and hide behind "the law" !!!!!!.
