Speeding Fine?

    Hi,
Just got home to a lovely letter from the traffic police telling me I've been caught by a speed camera at 81mph on a motorway (70 mph limit). I know that it's stupid (but many people do it- you can't drive on a motorway without being overtaken by everything at 70mph) so no lectures please.
What I need to know is the level of fine I can expect so I can budget for it.
I have to fill in a form and send it back and I guess that they'll issue penalty points and a fine then but I get paid on Friday and would like to tuck away enough to pay the fine promptly so I can forget about it.

    Thanks in advance

I think you have the answer of a £60 fine and 3 points, but can I also remind you that you MUST also inform your insurance company of the offence straight away, they may also ask for an increase in your premium right away or upon renewal, depends on the insurance company....sorry!!

It happened to me 2 years ago. On my car there was no increase, but said they might charge more when I renew, on my daughters car (I am a named driver) I had to pay more there and then!!

  • What about HGV lorries and the such. Some of them aren't capable of doing 60mph on a motorway! Why don't they get fined?

The maximum speed limit for Large Goods Vehicles is as follows

    Single carriageway = 40 mph
    Dual carriageway = 50 mph
    Motorway = 60 mph

obviously lower if signed, so if you are on a rural National Speed Limit single carriageway road doing 60 don't complain if the wagon holding you up is only doing 40 as its the limit.
    I have a cunning plan!
Proud to be dealing with my debts.

  • Mine said speeding fines make no difference at all to premiums.

My points were issued in Northern Ireland, and they had to issue me a separate Northern Ireland Counterfoil as they can not go on a UK issued licence - seems these points are only valid in NI?
I checked with my Insurance Company - they told me no need to declare?

Not what Diamond said....They insisted on £48 there and then!! As I said it depends on what insurance company you are with, but most are on the bandwaggon of charging more............

  • I got £60 for 34 in a 30 limit! Whatever happened to margins and warnings?

To the OP... join the police force pdq and you'll get away with it :)
  • I got fined £60 + 3 points in 2004 for doing 41 in a 30 zone, and a friendof mine at the courts said that I was wise to have accepted responsibillity, because if you argue it in court, the penalty for being more than 10 mph over the limit can be 6 points and up to £1000!!

I got another one last month and am fuming. Only at myself though - I knew the limit and broke it. If you don't like the revenues generated by speed traps, don't break the law.

BTW, Direct Line didn't charge me any more for my first lot, and Hastings Direct don't seem to care much either. The little man on the phone asked me, and when I said I had points, his exact words were "well, who doesn't these days?"

They are merely a suggestion and advice to the police, they are not law. There are now a growing number of zero tolerance areas where anything over the speed limit is summonsed.

To the OP, I suspect you were caught by SPECS cameras which measure your speed between one point to the next and if you get there too quickly then you must have been speeding.

ASk 'em when they last checked the caliberation of the cameras, always room for a percentage or two difference ;) Then ask for evidence that it was YOU driving the vehicle (if the photo is a bit blurry this may put things off for a bit).

Obviously i'm not suggesting you lie your way out of it, but it may give you an extra few weeks (and a pay day) breathing space x
