  • What about something as simple as this.

If you are going to declare a professional interest in, for example, mortgages by way of a signature then you must supply the MSE forum team with your fsa number for them to verify your status.

If they are not satisfied that you are genuine then they simply remove your signature.

A little rough around the edges I know, however the basic principle surely has to work?

The only downside I can see to this is that it would attract possibly unwelcome responsibility on the part of MSE for the credibility of the brokers posting on the site.

    Thoughts?

I like the idea of the forum identifying us before allowing us to join/checking out existing members, but that will cost them money - perhaps we personally should fund the costs of checking?

This will do two things -

    1. protect the forum users from brokers that have not been validated by the forum team

    2. Prevent hundreds of advisers joining the site in the hope it will generate
    free leads for them

    3. Enable the forum admin to identify any broker, new or old that is COLD
PM'ing, and the be able to ban their userID

The only loophole here is the advisers that join the site (or indeed existing ones) who do not declare their status to MSE and then PM looking for business, so again, perhaps a sticky showing the site rules on this linked to signatures would be beneficial?

    Any thoughts!

I am upset that MortgageMamma was upset. It is hard when you are or think you are under personal attack, to not take matters to heart and have them ruin your day and night. If you care about issues then your emotions come into play. In many other professions a cold detatched approach is instilled at an early stage. Perhaps matters involving money will always enrage someone to lash out at you. Consider some form of martial arts training. It may make words seem less of a threat and be of use when dealing face to face with random members of the public with violent agendas.

If you had watched spooks you would have fallen asleep within 10 minutes.

Just to quote Martin's OP to remind people what the thread was started for. I am aware that just a few posts in Martin changed his mind regarding naming companies but in 7 pages and god knows how many posts this has gone way off at a tangent :)

    Dear Mortgage Broker MoneySavers,

I know many of you graciously give up your time to help people out on the boards. In the early days there were just a couple of you, now there are quite a few.

One of the special permissions is to allow you to write in your signature who you are as it helps people. Yet different people do it in different ways and this can cause issues. What I'd like to do therefore is standardise the signatures of MBs here - so its the same for all.

My two remits in this are

    1. I want people to know you are mortgage brokers
    2. I want to allow you to ensure people don't think this is registered advice.

    This is my first suggestion:

I am a mortgage broker at INSERT MORTGAGE BROKER (NOT HYPERLINKED). All of my posts are my own personal opinion, and should not be interpreted as either finacial advice, or an official company stance.

I am more than willing to listen to suggestions and debate on this. Of course I will make the final decision - but if we could all work on this together then I think that's the best way.

Alternative suggestions and additions - changes - lets get the discussion open. Thanks

    Martin

    IMPORTANT NOTE:

This thread is only for discussing the signature situation. Please do not go off topic on it. If someone else does, pls don't respond, this is an important thread to discuss the policy.

Towards the end of this week - I will be reading through the thread and making a decision. After that there will be one signature and that will be it - no others will be allowed - so do have you say on the signature issue now.

    Thanks

    Martin

So it appears to have little to do with the "cold PM'ers" but just a standard signature.

This is meant to help the discussion. This post was just reported to me as a moderator at WPW the ! sign means that a moderator receives notification by e-mail of a dubious case of spamming. I have given the poster time to respond to the claim after which if no suitable response is obtained it goes from the forum. It works and keeps us free of abuse.
