Inherently faulty Notebook - no receipt.

I purchased a Notebook from what one may have considered a reputable high street store, which was inherently defective and doomed to fail.
The store has agreed to a refund / replacement on the privso that I can produce an indepentent engineers report and a receipt.
I paid cash, and have since lost the receipt - as I gathered it was out of warranty and slowly dying a death - at this point I was unaware of the inherent defect(s).
The store in question is claiming that serial numbers of machines are not logged and therefore cannot provide me with a copy of our agreement (duplicate receipt).
I know that the SoGA does not require a receipt be produced, but a sufficient proof of purchase ie bank statement. I am considering submitting a money claim online, but would my word of mouth be sufficient proof of purchase, as I, myself know for a fact that I purchased this Notebook at that store?

In short, no. The only way is if they only sold that product and no other retailer did and even then they could say it was stolen. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

Surely, from the serial number they would have record of it progressing through their system, as it is scanned ie purchase, which store took stock of it, and when it left the shelf?0

I doubt it, unless you can tell them where and exactly to the minute when they maybe able to print a reciept of but I doubt they record seriel numbers and all the barcode will do is show how many they have sold etcThe Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

I know where, but not to the minute. That store couldn't have sold many really.... how many would they stock? 10, 15, 20? How many would be paid for cash, 1 - 2?
If phone IMEI numbers are were stored 10 years ago, laptop serial numbers will be now.... plus, from my serial number, they can tell me my warranty has expired? How is this?0 -

I'll admit I do not know how the places like Currys etc store what products they have and the insurance requirements but I would be surprised if they record the seriel number of each and every product they have, it would be alot of paperwork.
At the end of the day they could just refuse to look as the onus is on you to prove that you purchased it.
Sorry I'm not really helping. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

I accept what you are saying, but I think there must be a way around it.
I think I will sumbit a Claim anyway, see how it ends up for the sake of £30. I am not after a refund as I have had a few months semi-reasonable use of the Notebook (When it wanted to power up and connect to the internet), I would just like a replacement for one that does not suffer the same defects.0 -
So have you already paid for the independent report? If not, then surely it's more than just the £30 court fee!
I doubt the store will have recorded the serial number, and to be honest I think it's expecting a bit much for them to go out of the way to try and trace proof of purchase for you, for you to then use it to sue them!!! Have you tried speaking to the manager at the store and telling him the date your purchased to see if they can look it up; if so, what did (s)he say?
If you registered the serial number on-line with the manufacturer that may be a potential proof of purchase, but it's not foolproof since it proves only when it was registered not when it was purchased.0 -
The fact that someone has a serial no. is in no way proof of purchase. Who's to say you were the original consumer or even whether the laptop was purchased in the first place. OP, you keep telling us that it has an inherent fault, what is your proof of this or is it merely your opinion.0

The store will not have a record of the serial number. It's not on your receipt, on their system - only on the item itself. There's no way about it, the serial number is not going to help you prove purchase.
If you cannot find a receipt, and the store cannot find one for you...you're a bit stuffedSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
Go in when other people are there and say you want a duplicate receipt for contents cover on your home insurance as you dont have access to a photo copier, list the day and rough time and they should be more than happy to help (i know ive used this in the past). Then when you have it go id like a repair.Back by no demand whatsoever.0
