There may be no "valid" reason. But supermarkets have the right to sell to who they wish to. Someone (allegedly) has been banned before for enforcing their rights (albeit not rights given to them by the SOGA - they asked for the police to be called when a security guard got a little heavy handed with them). Although i do stress the "allegedly" part as obviously i am not in a position to comment on the bearing of truth behind it. Nor am i in a position to comment on what the store would or wouldnt do as i do not work for that company, let alone in that store.

And nor would i want to advise someone to do something which may end up with them being punished in any way for it.

Being confrontational would be enough to distress one of their employees which would give them grounds to ban you.

Any problems like this always ask for the store manager the CS girls do not have enough power.
  • What kind of dust is it that doesn't just hoover out?!

Judging by the product Possibly cast iron that leaves an horrible staining residue???

    Why the ridiculous question????

I would be demanding a gesture of goodwill for the inconvience this CS lady has caused. Eg extra travel costs and time as well as a refund

    Exactly my sentiment!

It's some kind of horrid grey wool dust type of thing that keeps coming out of the base.

Anyway, took it back this morning. CS manager said sure, didn't even check in the box and handed my refund over straight away. She was so pleasant and friendly and kept apologising for the pap product. Didn't bother complaining in the end as she was lovely.

Thanks to everyone for all their advice and tips. Appreciate.

A good way would be to go along the lines of "the product is faulty and it is your fault therefore how dare you ask me to take it home and clean it, you are punching your weight way above your pay rate get me someone who actually knows how to do their job or get me a manager NOW"

    Hope that helps

Is it really necessary to start insulting their salary? It just makes you look stuck up.

It's not insulting their salary, you are merely reminding them that they shouldn't be telling or doing things that they have no authority over.

I'm sorry, but if you came in to my shop and spoke to my staff in the way you have stated that you have, or would do, above; I would have you escorted out with immediate effect - and give you the advice that you may speak to another branch or deal directly with customer services.

What you are saying, if you have indeed said that to a staff memeber, is directly insulting and, depending on your tone of voice and attitude in the store could make the staff member feel threatend, upset or worse.

I've had customers come in to my shop like that, and I'm the senior member on site - I will not do a refund for anyone, at all, if they are behaving innapropriately.

On the other hand, if the customer comes in to the shop and is polite, understanding and honest - I will even bend the refund rules for them. Yes, you should be firm when you are asking for something you are entitled too, but telling a staff member "They are punching above their weight" is directly insulting. On the other hand, saying to the staff member "I can see that you're unable to authorise a refund for the reasons you believe to be correct - but I have to say I disagree with you and would like to speak to your supervisor." achieves the same thing without ruining that staff members day.

As far as the refund goes, YES you are entitled to a refund and NO you should not have to clean dust off. The comment about "It can't be resold and therefor should be refunded no matter what condition it is in" is not true; or at least not entirely true.

If a unit has clearly been damaged, then the shop has the right to refuse refund.
If a unit is just generally worn and torn, the shop has the right to offer a part refund or exchange, depending on the age of the unit and the wear and tear.
If a unit is faulty out of the box, you can have a refund or exchange, whichever you'd like.

This being said, the 2nd point there (Part refund) is usually too much of a painful process to be dealt with and you'll normally get a full refund or exchange.

If you haven't sorted out this product, you need to assert some knowledge. What's happened is the pedal on the left side simply was cross-threaded when it was screwed in. What happens here is when you place your foot on the pedal, it causes the pedal to be pressed down at such an angle that it causes an old time trap-door effect on the 'screw' part of the pedal. The downward angular pressure causes the screw part to rotate with the pedal, rather than the pedal rotating around the stationary screw. As the screw/axle isn't moving, but the pedal 'arm' is, it destroys the inside of the arm where the pedal screws in. That dust is actually metal shavings where it's worn away as you pedalled. I'd recommend not breathing this in and using a high-quality hoover to get it out of the carpet.

If you use a rubbish hoover (or vacuum cleaner, sorry) you risk getting metal shards inside the mechanics, though this is unlikely.

Be polite even when you're right.

EDIT: Sorry, I see you've sorted the refund now. Glad to see you've nailed it :D
