Have you refitted the vga lead at both ends yet?

If that doesn't work, and a different cable doesn't work, try resetting the lcd monitor to defaults using the on screen display

I have refitted the cable at both ends. I used a different monitor and the same cable, all is fine, i tried the different monitor and another cable, again its fine. It has to be the monitor surely. I have everything at defaults as far as i can tell. :)

It is an LCD monitor, and although i was/am tempted to bash it on the side, i think that may do more harm than good. :rotfl:

    Thank you :rotfl:
I think that's wise! I only suggested in case it was CRT.

Mine's done this before due to a not very well seated cable, most likely things to try:

1-remove the cable -BOTH ends, try a different cable (borrow one from a friend)
2-try a different monitor -does your TV have a PC input you could try connecting it to?
3- remove and reseat the graphics card in the motherboard and repeat 1 -2

Only after trying the above consider replacing the graphics card (£20+ if not used for gaming) or monitor (£variable, as low as £10 if you'd be ok with an old 2nd hand CRT PC monitor) or cable (£5ish) otherwise you're likely wasting your money and could well still have the problem since you've not worked out what was causing it.

PS if you have a laptop you could prove the monitor and cable to be good by plugging them into its external socket and seeing what kind of picture that gives out

As i have tried changing the monitor, and using different cables, and it works fine then, i cant really see that it isnt the monitor. I wouldnt really want a CRT one to be honest, and i do use the pc for gaming so a decent graphics card is essential.

The monitor is about 4 yrs old now, so its well out of warranty. :( I imagine so anyway, as the pc it came off was a bundle from Dell and it must have been about 4 yrs ago now. I kept the monitor to go with my new pc as i liked it so much.

No sorry was skipping thru towards the end of the thread, your graphics card is fine you just need a new monitor at worst case, Final things to try:

Does the monitor have any other inputs? if so and say, the VGA in is !!!!!!ed you might find the DVI or HDMI input works fine

Might be worth 'jiggling' and applying a little force to the suspect input to see if its giving 'loose/dodgy connection' symthoms -if so and its a decent sized and not very old monitor it might be worth trying a repair, if not you're into replacement monitor territory, expect to pay (for a non-CRT) £100-300 depending on size / spec you want, read reviews before parting with cash

Pay attention to picture quality, also getting one with a DVI/HDMI inputs would future proof it for a good few years.

I wouldn't worry too much about built in sound quality (never going to be 'great' and you can get good separate PC speakers for under £30 that'll be much better -you might even have some already), Definitely don't bother looking for built in TV tuners as they are usually bundled into poor quality/value monitors being used as a gimmick.

Hi JasX, i have just turned on my pc now and everything is back to normal. Thats good but kinda unnerving as now i'm really not sure what it is or if my monitor is gonna die a complete death all of a sudden. I really dont understand it now at all.

There is nothing else connected to the monitor, and i did test my other monitor last night and so if it was me messing with the cables etc that sorted it out, i wonder why it didnt get better sooner?.
Ah well, i guess i shouldnt complain.

Thank you for your help. :)
