It took me so long to find this thread again. Thanks for the name, I actually live right next to Bathgate (never realised that they had more than one store) so I will pop in and see what they say on Monday. Saves a little 40 mile trip to Stirling.

I got measured and was... 3 cup sizes bigger than what I thought! Suddenly I was in the D+ section of the bra shops!0

OK, in regard to dress sizes - no, it cannot be applied to everyone and I did say there were ladies would be an exception to this rule - especially in the larger sizes - however, it is a guide for most women to know whether they are in the right size and if they are not they can go and get re-measured.0

Agreed - its a 'general guide' that certainly can't be applied to all!
Definitely recommend ppl to visit professional fitter - the lovely lady at the shop I went to didn't even have a tape measure!
Most fitters don't measure to be honest.
And, in my opinion, if they do get a tape out more than once I would be concerned that they do not know how to fit (bet they measure you in M&S) and I'd not buy from there.0 -
Maybe that's why bra fitters always look at me and before I've even taken my coat off they're already telling me that I can't possibly be a 38 no matter what cup size it is.
I'm a 24, 26 or 28 depending on the brand and by your guide I should be a 44 46 or 48 back size but even a 42 is enormous on me and a 40 is obviously a bit too big as well. My boobs fall out of the bottom straight away and once I get them precariously balanced in the cups the band heads upwards to my shoulder blades at the back.
My friend's the same, she has a small waist, big boobs and a bootie so she wears a size 14/16 but has a 28G bra size. She struggled in 34s and 32s for years until she went to Rigby and Peller for her bridal underwear and got fitted.
No disrespect to your capabilities but a lightbulb went of above my head when I read what you said there.
I'd never say that to you - it is a rude thing to say to someone and I could not do that, if a 38 fits then you should wear a 38, if you came to me wearing a 44 and it did not fit then I would change you if it was too big.
You are one of my exceptions.
Likewise with your friend, it would be obvious (to me) that she has a tiny rib and would be a smaller band size. Lots of women do not even know a 28 and 30 band size exists so do wear a 32 and 34. The lingerie ranges change so much in such a little period of time. A year ago you could get a handful of 28 back sizes, now you can get loads, plus K cup sizes, now you can get loads of them too.
You can just tell when you have been fitting for a long time in all honesty but I'd never tell someone they are larger than they are - if they are happy in that band size I just make sure it fits and is not too big and that the cup size fits.0 -

I would recommend going to a specialist independent shop - they will most likely take time to ensure you care correctly fitted as small businesses like that depend on repeat custom.
Not neccessarily, get one that you feel comfortable with, not one that is rushing you because they are too busy.
I got measured for nursing bras as the lady insisted and she fitted me in a 38F. I wasn't even a 38 when I was pregnant - I was a 34! So not all independant fitters know what they are talking about. Watch the little video so you are pre-warned on HOW they should be fitting you.0 -

I now wear a 38D and i know it's the wrong size. I am a 12-14 dress size, measure 35 around my rib cage and a 41 around my back/boobs. Blue do you have any advice on what size i should try next time i am shopping?
I would try a 36DD or E. Cups should cup, the back should be snug.
Put your hand into the cup and scoop everything out from under your arm and put it into the cup, then part your breasts at the front so the wires sit against your ribcage. If there is any over spill go up a cup size. If the band feels too big go down a cup size.
Remember, the band should go around your back and sit around halfway down your back.
