Hi everyone, well NSD well and truly blown!
Just back from the vets, went there having paid my £60 for the cat's boosters the other day, happened to mention that he seemed to be eating a lot ( personally I think he's a bit greedy;)) .
Any hoo, before I knew it the vet decided he needed blood tests so that came to another £80:eek::eek::eek::eek: I'm a bit:mad: as I specifically budgeted for the boosters this month and that was £80 I could ill afford. I also got charged £8 for worming treatment.
Now I love my pets to bits and I would NEVER see them suffer but puss was not displaying anything untoward. He's always enjoyed his grub and he drinks a lot of awater too and has done since he was a kitten.
Now I'm worried sick waiting for the vet to phone me with the results.
Thanks to all those who posted re vets fees - what a variation throughout the country!
I appreciate your views and if anyone knows of cheaper worm/flea treatments for dogs and cats please let me know - I feel a little ripped off!:o

Hmm Jinty I am with you a bit here. Now my sister takes her mogs to the vets at the drop of a hat - including in the middle of the night to the emergency one.

Last week my oldest cat, was holding his paw up, on checking we could feel someting in his leg (I think it might have been a claw from another mog!) Anyway we held him and tried to get it out but he went a bit nuts, so we left him and I was going to take him to the vets the next day. The next day he was walking ok on it and we felt it and whatever was in there had come out, so I bathed it and gave him some metacalm that I had and he seems fine. No problem and no infection, yet if I had taken him to the vet it would have cost a fortune no doubt.

Now i do trust my vets but I can remember a few years back having to pay over £1,000 for one of my cats as they thought she has asthma! luckily I was insured but I still had to pay that out (in the days that I had credit cards so managed it)

I hope the test come back ok for you let us know.

It took me three months before I was brave enough to include every single payment when counting my NSDs...........and that was because I wanted to, not because I felt obliged to.
It took me six months to become confident enough to include D/Debits and such - and I still exclude 'social life', 'garden' and 'get fit' spends :o

 to the blood tests Jinty - and I pay about £8 in total for worming for all my doggies!! As for the dreaded *n*l glands SunyLooLoo - they don't charge when done as part of booster health check but charge about the same as you if done at a separate appontment

KateNut - I think I'll check if our vet's do nurse appointments for nail clipping 'cause that's a big problem for us - although our garden is paved, it is small and we are virtually straight onto fields so they don't get worn, and none of ours will stay still long enough to clip nails!!!! Though we can get the youngest's dew claws clipped, that's about all

A tip for anyone receiving any amont of Housing Benefit and/or council Tax, PDSA PetAid cover one pet for free (£5 charge to process application) for all injury/illness treatment - you still have to pay for jabs, worm/flea treatments - so t's worth checking out their web-site to see if you have a PDSA centre or appointes vet near you. We have insurance for the youngest 2 but have our 14 yr old under PetAid on the assumption that she is more likely to need treatment

It seems that I have relly started something here

Actually when we originally moved here we registered at a lovely family vet practice - but when we got Bess as a puppy in 2005 I was shocked at how much they charged for her initial jabs and what they wanted for spaying her, so I checked out V*etSavers (Best Fr*ends group I think) who are a national (I think) chain and it I could have saved over £20 on her jabs and spaying was going to be about £30 cheaper, so I had no hesitation in changing vets. And I have found them really good - staff are helpful and friendly and vets are generally very helpful. You don't often see the same vet as they seem to change regularly and they all seem to be foreign - South African being the most common or Australian/NewZealanders. My point is that it is well worth shopping around - after all we shop around for everything else to get the best price don't we

As for worming/flea treatments - lots of people recommend the net - vetuk I think is popular - I'll check out and confirm later

While I am here, I will report my NSD NUMBER 13 as I am definitely not going anywhere today - still decluttering - got to get that cupboard in from the van and in situ but need tomove other bits out of the way to get it there!!!!

Are you doing the boot fair tomorrow 3 dogs?

Haha I am glad you knew what I meant about my little minxy's "problem". Is is common in Jack's? or just most dogs? Also she has one a lot lower than the other...... There is an op she could have but she was SO poorly after she was spayed and a lump cut out it would just break my heart to see her in pain (and apparently it is a terrible pain which they say only lasts for 2 week but how can you explain that to a dog!)

My vets are companion care which are a big chain - really nice people but I have a feeling a vet my friend uses might be cheaper so I may change in times to come........

    Hi everyone:hello::hello::hello:
Missed you all yesterday but had a bummer of a day and didn't have the energy to get on here last night.

Update and catch up for yesterday and today a bit later.

Hi :hello: to the newbies and welcome, will welcome you officially later and add your names to the front sheet.

Hannah_10, spotted you in trouble as I flicked through briefly, yes you can change your rules this month. Start off slowly is the motto, but LfV is right, we never fail on here - we just don't quite make it.
Here's something to cheer you up hopefully

Vet fees - they're one of the reasons I'm a DFW - still paying the bills for my puss from last year:(:(:(. Don't start me off on that one:mad::mad: (he was worth it though, definitely)

    Back later
    Hugs to all
