Several times I've been waiting in the car and been told by people it's wrong and you're not allowed to do this. However I'm not the blue badge holder.

What's you not being the blue badge holder got to do with anything?

Honestly I can't believe what has just happened. I parked in my local town in a disabled bay, and before I even got my badge out to display, some oldish (well she must have been 60s I guess - if thats ageist I do apologize) woman knocked on the window of the car and ranted on at me that her husband was disabled and she needed the space and because I don't look old (I'm 45 by the way) I guess she took issue with me and wouldn't let me get a word in. Even some passers-by were watching the spectacle unfold!

Anyway, when I finally did manage to reply that I was disabled and I did have a badge she didn't believe me and said some sniffy things. I retorted that (in a very nice way) that she shouldn't always assume things and despite her age she should be more polite.

She eventually walked off and I was left shaking - my goodness I felt like I'd been interogated by the Gestapo!!!! We don't need a police force, just old ladies with a grudge!!

I understand how you are feeling I get this everyday, I'm 25 and have to use crutches after a having a bone tumour removed last year, when I park in the disabled bays at supermarkets it's a nightmare people are so rude! do they think I want to be disabled?! I have the right to park there as I have a blue badge yet I always feel bad :(

Because the spaces are for people with disabilities to be able to park nearer the store and to have the space to get out of their vehicles more easily. If the person who requires these facilities isn't intending on leaving the car then they don't need the space. Her husband is the badge holder and does require the facilities because it's him getting out of the car and going into the store.
  • As a former civil enforcement officer( traffic warden,.......please dont throw anything at me) I,along with my colleagues received training on BB's.

The ruling is that an able bodied person may park in a disabled bay,on yellow lines( as long as there is no loading restriction in force) while using a BB so long as the disabled person is being transported & the able bodied person has provided that transport.any Responsible person sat in a vehicle or connected with the vehicle displaying a disabled badge is required to present the BB to an authorised person on demand for the inspection.if the request is refused a fine of upto £1000 maybe enforced by the courts & any misuse of a BB can result in a £1000 & the confiscation of the BB for the rest of the BB holders life.

But that is for the public highway and in marked parking bays provided as part of the highways. If I remember rightly the "authorised" person was/is a Police officer or Traffic Warden?

Makes not a jot difference on private land or in private car parks, which I believe may provide the bays through their adherence to other acts.

so ive been told on here many times when i complain about the missuse of b/b
bays on private ground is NON ENFORCABLE it is just a polite notice

this i was also told by the local council when i complained about footballers parking in the disabled spaces at the local lesure centre. they said tell the manager and he can find them and politly ask them to move so i can park as the bays are not covered by any law!!!!!!!!
    what a waste of time!

edit sorry forgot to say if i block them in it becomes a criminal offence and i may get introuble by the police !!!!!!!!!!! go figure that one

your comment "edit sorry forgot to say if i block them in it becomes a criminal offence and i may get introuble by the police !!!!!!!!!!! go figure that one" is uncalled for.as with everyone else on here,i try to help, offer advice.
on private land a private enforcment company can be contracted by the company owning the land, any penalty charge issued by the enforcement company is not legally enforcable,it is an invoice that you dont have to pay.
the company who own the land still retain the right to refuse admission to their store, leisure centre or any other property owned by them,it would be very rare that this would happen though.

if a leisure centre is owned by a local authority then that authority owns the car park,so penalties can be issued & enforced,up to & including county court & bailiff actions.
so you see pwales,......i have figured that one out!

Im 24 and use my blue badge quite a bit, havent had any bad experiences yet (that i remember)
I don't like to use my blue badge when I go to work (Shopping centre car park) as I dont want to take up a space for a long period of time while Im working as can be hard getting disabled spaces on busy car parks sometimes, I do drive round looking for an end space tho, as I need the room to open my door fully to get out somtimes.

Perhaps members of the public wouldn't "police" the blue badge system if they thought the system wasn't being abused?
