As I've said I already have a Halifax Easycash which provides only Visa Electron - not much when you do a lot of online purchasing.
Would have liked to have been able to oppen the Clydesdale one as Maestro is also widely accepted and the branch is but 2 minutes drive from my place. Should I go back and try my luck aagain?
The following banks offer a Visa debit card with their basic bank account:- Co-op
- Barclays
- LTSB
- Natwest
- RBS
- Nationwide

You might get 'lucky' but there's a reasonable chance of the account being closed if you have issues with another part of the group.0 -
What if I want to open a basic (or any) bank account, where I definatly want a debit card to use in the shops, but I DONT want my salary paid in,I want it as an extra account.Dont want overdraft or even direct debit, just card to use in the shops.Where to go anyone ??0

Basic bank accounts are quite flexible on what type of income you can put in. Don't worry about it. If they ask, just tell them you want another account for budegeting, etc...0 -

Have a look at the table on pages 6-7 of this booklet for other providers.
On Natwest vs. HSBC - Natwest probably have the better basic account but HSBC are more likely to upgrade you to a 'normal' current account based on how you manage your basic account..

Use cash machines or the Post Office instead?

Thanks Sunil for the link. I would very much looking at everything like to open an account with NatWest but just to clarify could my RBS debt cause any problems? What I understand is that NatWest and RBS are two different entities and although RBS own the bank, does NatWest operate independently?
Much appreciated all for the info and help!0 -

I appreciate they operate independently however they use the same system so having debt with RBS "may" hinder your ability to open account with Natwest as Cambta previously stated. The best thing to do is apply as you wont know until you have actually applied.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
Hi all, can someone please help me ?.
I opened a step account with Natwest in may 2009 and they provided me with a crappy solo card ? here is my story, I went into natwest a couple of weeks ago to withdraw cash over the counter and the lady asked me '' Do you have five mins to talk about you're account ? I replyed no sorry I am in a rush, she said something about upgrading.
Anyway here is my BIG problem, when I was living in my old house I got a letter saying they are going to send me a new card, since then I have moved out to my new house and to make things worse I have lost my solo card (old card) since they have my old address how would I go about getting my new card. Also how would I go about trying to arrange an overdraft and cheque book (1st time banker)
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
