Basic Bank Account HSBC or NATWEST?

As for being shown the door at Clydesdale, I am contemplating on opening an account with HSBC or NATWEST. HSBC have sent me an application pack as I requested and NATWEST allows me to apply online. My questionis what cards do these banks provide? I have read NATWEST provide Visa Debit and HSBC only provide a cash card. If someone could enlighten me further as to what cards are provided, many thanks!

I had the basic bank account with Natwest (step account) which was great, this came with a visa debit card so you can do shopping online or instore with it.
I am very impressed with Natwest, you can ring straight through to the branch handling the account and each time I have been into their branches, the staff are always very helpful.
I had my basic account since feb and they have just upgraded my account now to give a cheque book and overdraft.
Certainly the best bank I have dealt with.

Though I now have a full bank account with HSBC, which comes with a visa debit card and cheque book, thier basic bank account only carries a cash card.

I also have a Natwest Step account which comes with a visa debit card. For a basic account I would go to Natwest. And their online banking is good.

I have bad credit with RBS (still repaying) and as far as I am aware RBS own NatWest, could they affect my application or banking with NatWest?

RBS offer a great account called the Key Account. I have terrible credit history which i am currently sorting out and RBS gave me a Key Account with Visa Debit and great internet banking. One of my debts is an old Natwest overdraft which i am repaying monthly and i still got the account. It can all be done online good luck!!!

I would recommend Natwest as they offer a debit card, which will be useful to you.

You could also try other banks instead of those two for a basic bank account. Majority of them offer a Visa debit card.

Thanks all for the recommendation so far. I will probably apply for natwest on monday. But before I do, what other banks offer basic accounts with visa debit? As I've said I already have a Halifax Easycash which provides only Visa Electron - not much when you do a lot of online purchasing.

Would have liked to have been able to oppen the Clydesdale one as Maestro is also widely accepted and the branch is but 2 minutes drive from my place. Should I go back and try my luck aagain?

Another problem with HSBC is that you can't make withdrawals at the counters, so if you want to make a large withdrawal that would be a problem.

Lloyds you would have a problem with as although they issue Visa Debit, you can only use Lloyds Cashpoints to take cash out. Your card would be useless in any other machine.

Not a problem, simply take your cheque book and card together with some photo ID (if it is a large withdrawal) to the counter and they can give you money, so long as it is in your account and they have it in stock.

    Hi

Co-op cashminder account is a basic bank account and will accept applications irrespective of you credit history. You get visa debit card, online/telephone banking and can pay in and withdraw cash at post offices.
