Then IE6 is not important, but XP SP3 has been out for over 2 years now, if you don't update you are leaving security holes all over the place, which may explain why you are infected in the first place.
You just run it manually from the Start menu. if you have updates set to Automatic in Control Panel>Security Center (as you should) then you shouldn't have to do anything,it will install the updates automatically. But since it's not, run it manually.

  • thank have checked and they should run automatically at 3pm daily but never have so i looked to do it manually and it said to back-up first so stuck again as I have no idea how to do that apart from putting photos and documents onto a CD - should i worry about backing up program files?? :o

Sure that's not 3am which is the Windows default time?
I've never personally had a problem with restarting after installing Updates or Service Packs, but you should be backing up data anyway as a matter of course regardless of this. All hard drives will fail eventually, it's when rather than if...
You don't need to back up programs, if the need arises you just reinstall the relevant programs.

You'll need to run WU several times probably to pick up all the updates. Make sure your system is clean before you attempt this-run MBAM again and post a new log for someone to check.

You need to run a Full Scan with MBAM-you have only run a Quick Scan. And before you run it make sure you update MBAM.

  • yes that used to happen on my PC when my computer was trying to access updates... Mozilla does not do this
"save money, save time, save earth" :money:
  • right just gone to do the full scan and it went to blue screen at 10.50 whilst scanning - the message on screen said

C000021a Fatal System Error Windows subsystem process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 000005 ( 0x7c9101b3 0x0069ed04) the system has been shut down

some digits were off screen to the left so may be missing. What does it mean??

I will start another full scan and post log :)

at least my original problem appears to have gone
