    Another company too look at, as it is always nice to have a few too look at and compare prices is Yes Insurance Breakdown

    http://www.yesinsurance.co.uk/car-insurance/breakdown-cover.html

    Get you home service
    In the event of a breakdown, you and your passengers will have the choice of onward transportation to anywhere in the UK or, if appropriate, hotel costs of up to £150 per person (maximum £500).

    expect it to be a little more pricey than Asda's breakdown!

    Or there is another one is as I said first, the RAC, you would have a fairly big company covering you so you would know you wouldn't have to wait too long.

    Yes, but you can also choose an option (at extra cost) to be taken home with you car.

    What is covered:
    • Relay is an optional extra to Roadside Assistance and is available only to those who have paid the additional Relay subscription at least 24 hours before the breakdown occurred;
    • Relay is available when the AA provides either Roadside Assistance or Home Start service and the AA cannot arrange a local repair of Your Vehicle within a reasonable time;
    • Relay provides recovery of Your Vehicle, together with the driver and up to a maximum of seven passengers to any single destination of Your choice on the UK mainland or in Northern Ireland (see also General Terms and Conditions, clause 1g
    Relay Plus is available only where You also have Relay entitlement and the additional Relay Plus subscription has been paid at least 24 hours before the breakdown occurred;
    Relay Plus is available if Your Vehicle is immobilised following a breakdown which the AA has attended under Roadside Assistance or Home Start and where the AA cannot arrange a local repair within a reasonable time. In these circumstances, as well as recovering Your Vehicle to any single UK destination, Members with Relay Plus may choose from either a replacement vehicle OR overnight accommodation OR public transport costs (see below for full details of what is covered under each benefit).

    Even the relay plus option still goes to local repair before relay home

    So I see now :o
    Looks as though they removed the fact you could go home without first being taken to a garage first.

    Are any of the other companies I have mentioned any use?

    If not, I would recommend you try a Breakdown cover search site which will not only let you search for the type of cover you want but will also find the cheapest on your behalf

    Thanks for all your help and looks like I will try a search site and phone a few of them up and ask them. Like I said all I'm after is to be taken home after a breakdown, not taken to a local garage first regardles of time to effect repair etc etc.
    Basically if I breakdown can't get mobile at roadside then "take me home please" what could be simpler.

    You will find all Companies have the local repair clause in their T&C's, think about it, they won't want to recover you say 300 mile's for a fault which could be repaired in 1 or 2 hrs, the problem you have is how stringently they enforce it. It gives the breakdown company the choice of you not being able to insist on recovery for a silly breakdown
    ANURADHA KOIRALA ??? go on throw it in google.

    Thanks for replies but still none the wiser. Am not necessarily after the cheapest,how does one define a "reasonable ammount of time" before recovery kicks in. Agree things like tyres can be done at a local tyre shop, it's just that should the car need any mechanical/electrical work to be done to get it mobile. I would like to be recovered back home so that work can be done by my mechanic at his garage. Basically if roadside mech can't get car mobile then I want option to be recovered home and not to any garage in the area.
    Any ideas.

    Autoaid will take you and your car to a destination of your choice:
    We will refund the reasonable cost of taking the vehicle, you and up to 5 passengers from the place where the vehicle has broken-down to any one place you choose
