Breakdown Cover

Looking for cover and there are some good deals out there. However when I check re recovery most if not all say car will be taken to a local garage (no more than 15 miles usually) and if car can't be repaired within 8 hrs then they will take you back home/to onward destimation. I would like to be taken home or on to my destination immediately, I use my local garage & mechanic that I kmow and trust to repair my car and don't want anyone else to do it.
Are there any companies who practice this type of option.

Thanks

Autoaid £37 pay and reclaim service.

    Emergency roadside repairs
We will refund call-out fees and labour charges to
repair the vehicle at the roadside and so allow your
    journey to continue.

Recovery of the vehicle and its passengers
We will refund the reasonable cost of taking the vehicle,
you and up to 5 passengers from the place where the
vehicle has broken-down to any one place you choose.

    Alternative travel
If the vehicle is not repaired at the roadside or is not
taken to a place of your choice, we will refund the cost
of alternative travel (by road or by rail) so that you and
    up to 5 passengers can:
    ■ finish your journey; or
    ■ return home.
We will also refund the cost of one person travelling by
road or rail to collect the vehicle from where it is being
repaired, after the repairs have been finished.

    but

This insurance does not cover the following.
    1.
    2.
    3. The cost of recovering the vehicle and its passengers if
the vehicle can be repaired within a reasonable period
of time at or near the place where it has broken-down.

With their record I think this is purely to stop people taking the !!!! ie if your car has 2 punctures with shredded tyres it would be difficult to repair at the roadside but could reasonably be taken to a local tyre shop for repair rather than a long recovery.

We are also looking for some car breakdown. One thing we really need is to have car hire for as long as necessary whilst the car is out of action as DH uses it for his business. It is a private car not a business vehicle. Any ideas for the best breakdown policy to cover the car hire?

I have found that the cheapest Breakdown service is when you often take it out with your insurance company

I am paying an extra £1.50 a month for complete EU breakdown.

    Can't beat that, I bet ;)

Thanks for replies but still none the wiser. Am not necessarily after the cheapest, how does one define a "reasonable ammount of time" before recovery kicks in. Agree things like tyres can be done at a local tyre shop, it's just that should the car need any mechanical/electrical work to be done to get it mobile. I would like to be recovered back home so that work can be done by my mechanic at his garage. Basically if roadside mech can't get car mobile then I want option to be recovered home and not to any garage in the area.
    Any ideas.

    Thanks

You want one like the AA or RAC.

I'd personally go with the AA, complete Roadside and relay protection, they will tow you to the nearest garage or to your home address within the UK.

Or will put you in a Hotel over night.

Be aware though, I think in my option, taking breakdown cover other than with your insurer can prove to be quite pricey!

    Relay
    • Recovery to any single UK destination of your choice if the AA is unable to fix your car at the roadside or arrange a prompt local repair.
Thanks but even AA arrange for a local repair.

Yes, but you can also choose an option (at extra cost) to be taken home with you car.

    Stay Mobile
While Relay will take you where you need to go, your car will still need to be repaired. This cover can ensure you stay mobile for up to three days. So if your car needs extensive garage work following an AA breakdown, choose from:

a courtesy car for up to 72 hours
public transport costs to your destination
    a night's hotel expenses

    Here http://www.theaa.com/breakdown-cover/index.jsp

This might be sort of what you are looking for.

I do know another company which would suit you, will find it and post link :)

    Found it!!

Think this is the sort of cover you are looking for:

UK & Republic of Ireland Recovery
If no suitable repair can be made by the end of the day, we'll take you and up to 7 passengers, to any UK destination or to one in the Republic of Ireland if that's where you're travelling.
With roadside cover we will take you to a local garage or 10 miles from breakdown.

Not bad at only £25 too ;)
