Anyone care to say what their av bill is if your on a meter? Trying to work out if I pay more than av or not. guess its hard to work out how much etc but my last bill was for 6 months and for most of that time there were only 2 of us and it was £168 (severn trent) I do tend to have a bath rather than a shower and up until recently I was having one a night- quite full as well I have to say. Hubby prefers shower but it is a power shower although we have never turned the booster on. Washing machine is probably on 2/3 times a week and never use sprinkler etc but use hose sparingly when watering in high summer. We are out at work all day and so only flush toilets etc mostly weekends(obviously in mornings and night as well in week!)
since my special effort for not wasting gas and elec have gone into force I am now looking at my water but dont know if mines excessive or not although I know there are areas where i can cut useage.

I had my severn trent water bill in today and it takes my total to £146 for the year. 1 Adult, 1 teenager and a soon to be teenager.
The only thing we do different to you is we only shower. Each once a day.
3 loads of washing a week. More during holidays from school.
I'm home all day so toilet flushed regularly and youngest I think flushes for fun.
I have a brick in my toilet systems so it holds less water for flushing.
It takes time for the water to run hot out of my kitchen tap so I collect that water to water my plants, runner beans etc.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

We've just switched to a meter. Under the old rateable value system our water & sewerage bill would have been £600 this year (large house). Using a meter it will be approx £300. There are 4 of us (2 adults, 2 kids of 6 &3). We both have a shower (power) every day, my wife is at home all day, washing machine on 5 times a week & the kids have regular baths.
We're with severn trent & don't particularly monitor our water use. I'm sure we could reduce it further if we tried.0 -
seems i may be using too much (not too much but can cut down if you see what I mean)Rikki yours is half of mine!! and JohnathanA is about the same but with more people and more useage!! OK then! new regime-wait until work til i use the toilet! (only joking)0

We're with Severn Trent payig £589 per annum for fixed rate. However, large garden, family of 4, and a washing machine doing around 4-5 loads p/w it doesn't seem worth the hassle of having a meter.
Apparently the per unit usage for a water meter is higher for a higher value property so it would probably not be worth it though I'm not sure if this is true

The metered charge in Severn Trent is the same for each cubic metre of water (and also the sewerage charge) regardless of of the size of your property - be it a mansion or tiny flat.
For 2006 that charge is 108.77p per cu mtr for water and 73.23p for sewerage. So a total £1.82 for each cu mtr of water supplied.
The only time type of property comes into the equation is if your surface water drains into the sewer(the majority dont as they have a soakaway). Then it is on the type of property flat or terrace/Semi-detatched/detached. You pay £24/48/72 depending on type of property. Value of property or council tax banding does not come ito it
There is also a £10 pa fixed charge everyone pays.
Unfortunately it is not possible to work out the exact charges per £ of Rateable Value for unmetered charges unless you know what part of the Severn Trent area in which you live(they have 8 different charging zones)
Now with a meter a family of 4 the average consumption of water should be approx 240 cu mtrs per year so you would expect to pay approx £450 pa for your total annual bill - and in the unlikely event your surface water drains in a sewer you would pay an additional £24/48/72 depending on type of property.0 -

I think it's best we reluctantly stay on the unmetered and just keep watering our garden without worry, while Severn Trent continue to water London Road :rotfl: (leak is now into its 6th week  ) 0 -

Hi Mrs Baggins,
Your water charges sound high to me. I live in a 3 bed-roomed semi with my two children. My daughter and I bath every day and my son less often(!). I use the washing machine about 3-4 times per week and wash-up by hand. I don't water the garden and rarely wash my car (lazy), but other than not overfilling the kettle and not leaving the tap running while brushing teeth, we don't particularly use water saving methods. My water meter charges average £60-70 each six months with Thames (Leaky) Water.Debt at highest: £6,290.72 (14.2.1999)
Debt free success date: 14.8.2006 :j0 -
I live in Manchester (United Utilities) and have a 3 bed semi. There's just me and OH (and little dog that needs a quick shower most days to remove muck from park). We both shower every day and I have a bath most nights. I do about 4 loads of washing a week - our bill is £15-16 a month by DD (about £190 a year). We're on a meter as it was a brand new house when we moved in.
Seems quite reasonable to me.
I do have a water balloon thingy in each of the toilets though (3 in house).0
