I am looking to sell a platinum 0.3 carat diamond ring, can anyone suggest the best way of doing so please?

I too have tried to sell a platinum engagement ring - with the benefit of hind-sight it looked similar to the Diana/Kate Middleton one.
I tried a number of jewellers but was aware of getting the here is a mug down on his luck treatment. [Said ring now looks very nice on third finger left hand of my daughter in law].

The high retail margins still being asked (50% ?) on jewellery mean that some effect like that is inevitable - the only time I have seen jewellery selling at trade prices available to members of the public, was at specialist auction sales organised by a local auctioneer - unfortunately he closed down/retired in the property boom - I don't know if Ebay has managed to replace it.

The same goes for "rose" gold - unless there is a superb provable back story documented and/or visible on the ring, the current very high furnace prices are likely to claim the ring.
  • Hi

Just wanted to let people know of what appears to me to be a bit of a scam. I sent silver spoons (hallmarked) to post for gold and they told me they weren't a precious metal and it would cost me £15 to get them returned.

Thing is they were part of a set of 6. I sent 2 identical spoons to gold refiners and they acknowledge them as silver and offered me a fair price for them! I'm currently in dispute with Post of gold to get them back. If needbe I'll pay the £15 and get the evidence that they are silver and then take them to small claims court. Just wanted to let people know that although they might be OK for gold, I don't think they want to deal in other metals despite advertising that they do.

  • Hi
I'm a little bit concerned as i had some gold to sell and looked on MSE for the best postal gold company to sell to and saw HGM. I googled them and sent off for a postal pack and posted off my gold last Thursday.

I read loads of reviews which said they're really fast paying, next day contact etc etc. so expected to hear back from them Friday, yesterday, but nothing.

It was then i realised the company i'd sent if off to was Hatton Garden Refinery and not Hatton Garden Metals...stupid mistake i know...

I've googled them and they seem to have good reviews but now i'm worried.I know its only been a few days and i've used royal mail track and the parcel's been recieved by them so was hoping someone on MSE has used them just to make me feel slightly more at ease.

I think from what I can see they are legit.

There is a sure fire way of checking them out. Drop them a call or e-mail and if there is no response then you know something is up

Can I just ask why you sent some to different companies? Just I have a few items I want to sell and now I'm wondering if you can post to different companies to prices? I'd guess it's best not to because of return postage costs / risk of loss so just wondering why you chose to do so?

  • Just to update - I emailed them this morning and got a phonecall within about 10 minutes with a very similar offer to what i had been offered on the website.I accepted the offer over the phone, verified my bank details with them and it was paid into my bank account within about half an hour.Very happy.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Having read the posts in this forum, I have just sold some (mainly) broken pieces of gold jewellery to Lois Jewellers in Birmingham. Their website was very easy to follow and is updated daily with prices. The day that I sent my gold, they were offering £12.30 per gram - I checked beforehand with my high street 'best price paid' jeweller but they were only offering £8.41.

I sent my pacakage by registered post and received a call the following morning, offering slightly more than expected as the price had increased overnight. I accepted and the money was in my bank account by lunch time!

I really couldn't be happier. For a few bits of gold that I would never be able to wear again and I was given £371. :T:T:T

Hi, we've been left a small pile of jewellery from my mil, sorting through most of it is either 9k gold or fashion jewellery, however there are 2 pieces marked CHAP 24k, I've looked online but can't find out if these are gold plated, fake gold or the real thing. Can anyone shed any light on what chap means please? X

Does it have a hallmark on it?

If it doesn't then chances are it is not real gold, as all gold sold in the UK has to be hallmarked - unless MIL regularly purchased jewellery in countries that don't hallmark.
