I did some mystery shopping recently and the scenario involved selling gold, sorry I cannot say who the company was though but it was on the High St.

I was surprised that all three of the outlets offered me different amounts, ranging from £103 to £118 on the same day for the same items. It was the same company as well.
Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,108
  • Its great to have this space to tell of our experiences in selling gold. I went to a damelt gold buyers in kent. I found the web site on the net under damelt.co.uk I see that they had over 72 positive feedback shown on the site and all the prices they pay are displayed clearly. I was invited to visit them to see all my jewellery weighed and tested in front of me, I was really please with the service and got paid really high price for my jewellery. I am so pleased with the price i was given. I just cant understand why they are not noted in the top gold buyers on this web site. I hope eventually they are noted as a top company as i was given such a great service by them.

We wanted to sell some gold for the first time, after reading the above posting we decided to try Damelt. We phoned first and spoke to Teresa who gave us the price per gram we could expect to receive. We arranged a time to see her, very pleased with price we got. Loads of info.on their website. The office is very easy to find in Chatham, just park in the Wickes car park opposite. We also can recommend them, very knowledgeable, honest with no pressure.

    Hi

I have a few bits and bobs that I want to sell. A few questions please:

    1. What's the best way to take out the gemstones, quartz etc?
    2. Where can I sell gemstones?
    3. A side question- What the magnifying thing that jewellers use?
Who's the number one best? Is it still hatton garden?

    Thank you

    Bye

  • We sent off 7g of broken gold chains to postgoldforcash.com - they offered £13 which I declined and asked them to send it back. I then received an email that Zoe from returns dept had spoken to her boss who is a jeweller and they were now offering me £70. I again declined and am expecting the items back in the post. Talk about trying to rip you off....

I'm sorry but this seems to be the most hastley written article to date! They've taken the Compare The Gold market web site, something that has just sprung up over night as gospel fact - The article almost needs a 'sponsored by Hatton Garden Metals' banner on there somewhere! and i question how many dealers MSE actually sent gold to for review... I deal with Scrap Gold UK in the Birmingham jewellery quarter regually but don't see any mention of them anywhere and they are one of the original family dealers in the Scrap Gold trade - and neither MSE or Compare The Gold Market seem to have 'tested' them + what little info the gold comparison site has on them is incorrect!

I have to agree with Dreem, and would like to add my 2 pence. Apologies for resurrecting this old Post, but it appears that people are still selling their gold, and this particular forum is quite active.
    1. HGM and scrapgold.org.uk ARE suspiciously tightly knit. So is Krugerrands.org.uk, GoldSovereign.org.uk, and GoldSovereigns.org.uk. src: seoexperts.org.uk/case-studies/hatton-garden-metals
Looks to me as though MSE has built HGM's business from the ground up as HGM were almost a nobody before this undercover investigation.

Road to Hatton Garden Metals Success:
    • HGM rent little office in HattonGarden above Heart of Hatton Garden Jewellery Emporium.
    • HGM Self promotion affiliated websites. seoexperts.org.uk
    • 3-4 spam self made recommendations on MSE forums as well as other forums. e.g. forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?p=10497473#post10497473
    • HGM self promote Argos misprice for a 9ct chain, then advertise that you can buy new at Argos, then sell as scrap to HGM.
    • A few MSE users start using HGM's gold buying service
    • MSE requests gold buyer feedback from MSE users.
    • HGM request its customers (who mostly are MSE users) to leave feedback on forums
    • MSE rate HGM as best gold buyer in country as HGM apparently have 10s of pages of feedback, but other 'more established' and 'higher paying' gold buyers hardly have any.
    • HGM & MSE set up affiliate program for recommendations.
I vote that if MSE need to revisit the list of investigated companies and recommend a new gold buyer for 2012.

Please note, I am not saying to stop using HGM. They do offer a good service otherwise people would be complaining on here. I just don't understand why HGM are rated above Lois for example when Lois clearly pay just as quick, but offer a better return.

    Hello,

I use the site all the time but don't usually post. I saw the gold selling section and thought I'd post a few things I learnt from working at a gold buying kiosk in 2010.

    1. They are only interested in the gold for it's scrap value. If you have a piece of jewellery that has stones set in them, they will estimate the weight and subtract it from the cost. Even if they're diamonds, they won't pay you more.
    2. They offer a much lower price per gram than independant jewellers. Many people who would come to me for a quote would tell me that there was a jeweller in the town centre that was offering £8 per gram of 9carat compared to our £6. (this was the cost in 2010). People were put off visiting this jewellers because you had to ring the doorbell to get in, but it would be worth it, especially as they'd consider the stones.
    3. If the pieces were not hallmarked, they would acid test them. This left a permanent mark on the jewellery and would inevitably decrease it's value. (not for scrap, but as a piece of jewellery).
    4. They would pressure us to pressure customers to sell. In fact the reason I left was because I was uncomfortable taking this gold off people who were desperate for cash, knowing they could get a better deal elsewhere.

So, shop around and don't let them pressure you into selling or acid testing your gold unless you give them permission, as it can ruin it.

I hope this helps, it was a while ago but it was possibly one of the worst jobs I've ever had because I thought it was so immoral, not to mention they underpaid me when I left! I clearly have no future as a dodgy dealer!

(This is referring to my experience working at a kiosk, I can't say for sure that this is the same for TV companies, but this particular company was a sort-of spin-off of a pawnbrokers. I'd say your much better off going to a jewellers, independant or otherwise)

Sovereigns should be easy as they have standard weight and gold content.

Here is a starting point - there are many others but watch for hidden charges and reliability concerns and delays in settlement..
