A Payment A Day - Part 9

The head banging i later found out was pretty much due to me being a first time mum and being well and truly over anxious of my baby hurting himself. It turned out he hated being in a cot and me running to him every time he tried to hurt himself wasn't helping. So folowing my health visitors advice we removed the cot and put him on a adult mattress on the floor (removing anything from his bedroom he could hurt himself on) added a night light and if he banged his head I ignored it, that was the hard bit!
Shocking as it seems he gave himself 3 nose bleeds and dazed himself a couple of times during the 2 weeks i found it unbearable and at least five times was on the phone to my social worker saying i was a bad mum.
Having a baby with bruises on his forehead constantly was very stressfull. However i found if i stopped restraining him everytime he did it within a week he pretty much realized that cuddles were not for that behaviour.
Don't get me wrong if anyone has a child with this problem you should have an assesment and the support before taking this action but it worked for us and not really a solution we would have come to by ourselves as young parents.
As our social worker was so supportive and gave us so much support and confidence as parents we even ended up helping out on a loal positive parenting course.
I saw a video on facebook today that really moved me it was mums writing on a large sheet of paper what they would tell themselves if they could just before the birth of there first child. There was advice such as "Don't feel guilty for asking for a break" , " Remember you are beautifull", "Inperfection is the new perfect", "your the mum you are the expert!" etc...Grocery challenge Jan 270.27/200:eek:

DS is a wee bit of a head banger but he doesn't cry. He has a VERY high pain threshold which, in itself is worrying - he can smack his head on the cot all night and it doesn't bother him!
He's also started trying to chew through cables...when they're plugged in!!Started PADdin' 13/04/09 paid £7486.66 - CC free 02/11/10

Sometimes he cried, but more often than not he just seemed hell bent on belting his head against the wall in a systamatic manner, or anything else that was hard it was very bizarre to me at the time but having researched it more now it is quite common especially with children with learning/social difficulties which my eldest child has. Having said that he hasn't really done it since apart from the one or two times after that initial period.
The chewing through cables thing i think we missed thank god, thats another reason for your heart to jump into your mouth!
BTW my eldest is now 11 and doing very well, He started secondary school this week and is so far doing really well, he's been placed in higher sets in maths and science but has been placed on special measures for english due to his dyslexia. As I keep telling him if Richard Branson can do it so can you. (on the dyslexia front!)Grocery challenge Jan 270.27/200:eek:

My wee man has learning difficulties which is why he has a high pain threshold, it's just another symptom.
As for the cables, he has lowered awareness of danger, he gets himself into all kids of things!!Started PADdin' 13/04/09 paid £7486.66 - CC free 02/11/10
