  • one of my goals in life is to move to america or even just go for long periods, eg extended tourist visa for at leat 6 months, but if my mental health record will or could be an issue, that worries me.

im wondering if stress and anxiety is already something that will be considered in a move to america.

I can understand your anxieties about being labelled and worrying about seeing a psychiatrist
BUT - what you are forgetting is your own health - it is easy when suffering from an anxiety disorder to place too much emphasis on the down side of recieving help.

My dh had clinical depression which caused him to lose his job - I was at my wits end - he was like a ghost of a person - he was placed on prozac - but became very violent on it ( he is usually very gentle) I went with him to our GP and explained that they had to do SOMETHING to treat him

our GP referred his to a psychiatrist - she had 3 sessions with him and one with him and me together
she got to the root of his depression and advised him to speak to a counsellor, which she arranged.
He never saw her again, and after about 12 months of weekly counselling he announced one day that he felt so much better he didn't need to see the counsellor again.

He recovered, with the help of the psychiatrist and her treatment plan - and he eventually re-trained ( he had been a firefighter in his previous career) and got some It qualifications and has been in work ever since - none of the jobs he has applied for have asked anything about mental health issues and he has been lucky neough to remain depression free since.

The point I am trying to make ( although long winded!) is this - try and not worry too much about how this referral/treatment from a psychiatrist will affect your career and holidays in the future - but how it will affect your ability to cope and to feel better - that after all is what you want and need.

    i wish you well
