psychiatric case and consequences in life

hi
I am awaiting an appointment with psychiatrist.
GP has referred me.

But 3 other medical professionals i have seen for diff reasons, have all been concerned, and said think twice before you go on that route.
One GP was reluctant to refer me to psychiatric dept.
One medical pro said its end of the line, and i didnt seem it.
One said it will affect my life, as its marked on my medical record forever, and could affect mortgage application, life insurance etc.

Im a little worried.

Can anyone shed some light?

There is no reason why seeing a psychiatrist should cause you any problems for the future. A sectioning under the MHA can cause problems in the future, but they happen pretty rarely (and you would not be waiting for an appt if there was any question of you being sectioned).

That's pure predjudice plain and simple. There is a thing called the Disibility Discrimination Act which thankfully limits the expression of such prejudice to baseless drivel like this and so no, mortgage companies do not behave like school children jeering the village nutter.
I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)

As of the last count I have cleared
    [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt. :(

Whilst there are laws and procedures in place to protect people from discrimination it does exist.

In more traditional places like City finance positions who require medical disclosure you would not get a job. It does also and quite legally affect insurance premiums and try getting basic cheap medical insurance when you have to declare any form of treatment for mental health issues.

It's the same though with physical disabilities, do a search for medical insurance for your holiday trip and as soon as you tick 'yes' to any medical question they tell you that you need to phone for a quote. You can't beleve how much extra I pay on one lot of life insurance because of a wrong statement once made in my medical records.

However, despite all that if you are ill then you need to see the appropriate specialist. If forinstance you broke your arm you wouldn't worry about seeing a surgeon to reset it if necessary in case it upset your future life. If you need treatment of any sort then get it, better that than live with something that will affect you anyway.

    thankyou

but what and when is it marked on your record?
    the actual wording or diagnosis?

i think only stress is noted on my record at present.

i dont get it, wouldnt get a good job in city, if...i saw psychiatrist?
    or the specific disorder?

if youre going on holiday, the health insurance is higher??? for mental health issues?

    insurance premiums affected.
which insurance? all insurance? car insurance?

3 medical pros said i dont need to go that far.
only one GP insantly said "ill send you to psychiatrist".

what if psychiatrist says "your ok, nothing to worry about, apart from a little bit of this and that, which can be dealt with personally.
then what is put on file? still a mental health case??

as soon you get an appointment, you are a mental health patient??????? who is getting treatment for illness?????? before its even been diagnosed and treated, if that....??

    I see a psychiatrist.

My main regret is that it took so long to get a GP referal to one.

Think of it this way....when I ripped my Achilles Tendon, my GP couldn't deal with it effectively, and refered me to a Physiotherapist.....when I found a breast lump, my GP couldn't deal with it effectively and refered me to an Oncologist.....when I showed symptoms of Autism, my GP couldn't deal with it effectively and refered me to a Psychiatrist.

Seeing a Psychiatrist has had many benefits...He is the one who found a med that manages to control some of my more severe tics...He made the official diagnosis of ASD...He wrote a report for my DLA application...He wrote to the Housing Office in support of my request to be given accommodation....And he refered me to a Social Worker who has helped to ensure I can live as independently as possible.

I have never had any problem with ASD being 'on my record'...why should I? It is part of who I am. The same as my asthma and poor eyesight. I am in no way ashamed of my condition, and have no wish to hide it.

As for not getting a good job....absolute rubbish! I ran my own very succcessful department. As my condition became more severe, I kept bosses fully informed and they were able to adapt to my needs in the workplace.

Yes, I have known idiotic prejudice because of my condition. But no more than two friends - one who is partially sighted and one who walks with a stick.

If your conditon will be helped by seeing a Psychiatrist, then that is where you need to go.
  • hi again

psychiatrist meeting was cut short, as i had moved house, the CPN said she couldnt continue. (first meeting).
she said see my new doctor.
Told him, he said lets first see a councellor. So awaiting that now.

But just another query, could a mental health issue, like depression or similar, affect ones chances or ability to emigrate abroad in the future?
or simply, just going on holiday? I know a person who has been to prison here in UK, for whatever reason, can not visit america: they were turned back at usa airport.
Wondering if mental health is similar to this.

Mental health conditions certainly won't affect you going on holiday, I spend as much time outside the UK as possible! ;)

I don't know a great deal about emigration issues, but I believe some countries will require some sort of medical clearance. You would be best to ask on an expats forum for the country you are interested in to get further details on this.

officially you would be inadmissable to the USA without going through the hastle of getting special paper work done if you have suffered a severe mental illness
in actual fact i guess no one would know if you don't tell them.

The US law lists specific classes of persons who are not eligible to receive visas and are inadmissible to the USA.

    These classes include:

~ Persons afflicted with contagious diseases (such as tuberculosis) or who have suffered serious mental illness.
~ Persons with criminal records involving offences of certain kinds, narcotic addicts and traffickers.
~ Persons who have sought to obtain a visa by means of misrepresentation or fraud.
~ Persons who are or have been members of certain organisations, including communist organisations, terrorist groups and those affiliated therewith.

A person who is found ineligible on these grounds can still get a waiver by filing a relevant appeal with the US immigration authorities.
If granted, one can become eligible for a visa.

That list is overly simple. The ESTA site gives more information:
With regard to physical or mental disorders, answer ”Yes” to this question if:
    (a) You currently have a physical or mental disorder and a history of behavior associated with the disorder that may pose or has posed a threat to your property, safety or welfare or that of others; or
    (b) You had a physical or mental disorder and a history of behavior associated with the disorder that has posed a threat to your property, safety or welfare or that of others and the behavior is likely to recur or lead to other harmful behavior. Answer ”No” if:
    (a) You currently have no physical or mental disorders; or

    (b) You have or had a physical or mental disorder without associated behavior that may pose or has posed a threat to your property, safety or welfare of that of others; or

    (c) You currently have a physical or mental disorder with associated behavior, but that behavior has not posed, does not currently pose nor will pose a threat to your property, safety or welfare or that of others; or

    (d) You had a physical or mental disorder with associated behavior that posed a threat to your property, safety or welfare or that of others, but that behavior is unlikely to recur.

If anyone met that criteria, they really should not be travelling anyway!
