psychiatric case and consequences in life

  • You have to look at the pro's and con's - I don't know you so don't know exactly how bad your illness is; but I had no choice but to see a psychiatrist; I attempted suicide 3 times (not something I am proud of). I would not even be here if I hadn't gone down that route.

Yes, it has meant I have have to update my life insurance; but this was this covers my family and I don't mind paying a bit more (because who knows I might get run over or something) and my mortgage hasn't been affected (although I did have this before I became ill). I have had jobs restricted or turned down, but that is something I have to deal with.

Have you tried alternative therapies - I found excersise to be a great method.

    thankyou all

when i go on holiday, for health insurance, should i or shouldnt i declare?

Is stress and anxiety a "serious mental health ilness/ mental disorders?

I am still concerned about going down Mental Health route, I dont have anything major on my record as of yet,
apart from stress and anxiety (via sick notes) but no medicine or anything has been given to help me.
I am suffering arm/muscle pain (from computer usage) and have severe eczma which i am constantly itching my skin, the same muscles in arms are being used, bathing/showering/moisterising etc leave me exhausted like i can barely move: this im sure is affecting my happiness/mood/mental well being /worry of it all, extreme sadness, tiredness, sluggish, weak, slow.
I dont know how much the mental/mood issues are, whether they are a major concern, or just a part of a general overall health problem, or exasperated by the arm pain. Doctor says skin problems are stress related.

But how am i supposed to deal with stress? Its hard to find all the answers yourself.
I feel physically and mentally weak. I dont feel like a normal functioning healthy human being, theres always something stopping me being fully productive in the areas i want to be, whether its a thought process im fighting, or a physical pain/problem, not feeling at ease and comfortable and "normal".

I dont know which symptoms i should focus on telling my doctor.
I think get this skin thing under control, i may be suffering an allergy, can GP test me, ill ask him today.
Or maybe ask him to send me to dermatologist.
Then see about arm pain, Physio,
but the mind matters have always been a concern for me, for years, even before the computer pain started.

I spoke to a private hospital (orthopaedic) who advised i see a NHS physio for now.

And i will see councillor via GP soon, so theres no immediate rush to get me diagnosed with a "serious mental disorder" yet, i think.

(needhelpsaving: no, it is not as bad as suicide or anything like that, excercise does not help, ive been going gym for almost 2 years quite regular, doesnt change much how i feel. I eat healthy too. )

Tell your GP everything, even the things that you think are irrelevant. They may be unrelated, but they may also make a connection that gives you a diagnosis.

With regards to the US criteria, you would not have to tick the Yes box. I have a severe mental health condition, but I don't fit the criteria - they are concerned about people who are going to cause trouble, not someone who poses no risk.

the other thing, with medical insurance, is thast even if you have to ring for a quote, it doesn't always mean you pay more. there are further screening questions.

I declare D's asthma, eczema and osteoporosis. because he's not been hospitalised with the first two and they are 'controlled'-ish, no problem. because he hasn't broken a bone, the osteo is OK too.

    )

stress and anxiety usually falls under mild/moderate mental health problems (not severe and enduring); you should still seek help if it is interfering in your everyday life

if you make a claim an insurance company will have access to your medical records (usually in terms and conditions). thats is a good reason to declare to them. they don't have connections to any government and shouldn't share info with them.

just for arguments sake i would say category d of the esta regs sounds pretty harsh to me. (unlikely to recurr)

Errr, I had and still have a mental health issue.
I have been sectioned in the past as I was likely to be a danger to others around me.

When I wanted to go to the States for a holiday in 05, I had to go the the American Embassy in London.

    It's a whole day job!!!

And the visa costs a bomb!!

I get a visa for 12 months and have to re-apply.

You can't even use the passport photo machines, as the photo they want is a little bigger. That costs £25 a time for a private sitting at a photographers.

Keep going ... all you are doing is giving us more evidence of your alter ego! :rotfl:

  • if i go to america next week on holiday, for travel insurance, do i have to tell them i suffered from stress and anxiety?

Stress and anxiety would not be sufficient for ESA in UK?

"if you make a claim an insurance company will have access to your medical records " . YOu mean a health insurance company (travel insurance)? or general health insurance in uk? i cant see myself getting health insurance in uk any time soon.

Goffo: thats reasuring, that you made it happen regardless.
12month visa? thats better than a 3month tourist visa!

Ignore goffo, he makes up stories to wind people up. You will not be asked to go for an interview.

You should inform your travel insurance because if you do not they could try to use it against you if you needed to make a claim. It should not make any difference to your insurance premium.

    I see a psychiatrist.

My main regret is that it took so long to get a GP referal to one.

Think of it this way....when I ripped my Achilles Tendon, my GP couldn't deal with it effectively, and refered me to a Physiotherapist.....when I found a breast lump, my GP couldn't deal with it effectively and refered me to an Oncologist.....when I showed symptoms of Autism, my GP couldn't deal with it effectively and refered me to a Psychiatrist.

Seeing a Psychiatrist has had many benefits...He is the one who found a med that manages to control some of my more severe tics...He made the official diagnosis of ASD...He wrote a report for my DLA application...He wrote to the Housing Office in support of my request to be given accommodation....And he refered me to a Social Worker who has helped to ensure I can live as independently as possible.

I have never had any problem with ASD being 'on my record'...why should I? It is part of who I am. The same as my asthma and poor eyesight. I am in no way ashamed of my condition, and have no wish to hide it.

As for not getting a good job....absolute rubbish! I ran my own very succcessful department. As my condition became more severe, I kept bosses fully informed and they were able to adapt to my needs in the workplace.

Yes, I have known idiotic prejudice because of my condition. But no more than two friends - one who is partially sighted and one who walks with a stick.

If your conditon will be helped by seeing a Psychiatrist, then that is where you need to go.

I wish I could thank you a thousand times for this clear, well argued, down to earth post.

Screw stigma and discrimination, we are what we are, every one of us.

my only advice would be get the help you need, because you may spend all the time worrying about it and take longer recovering. I am unable to work in my chosen line of work due to my illness but wish looking back now i so wish I asked for help sooner!

I realy can't see why mental health will be an issue regarding travel to usa, because if that is the case how many of the female popualation with Post natal depression would be turned away? I've have traveled to usa in the past don't rememeber beening asked about my mental health, but i have memory loss issues pmsl

I know it is easy for me to say but why see issues ahead regarding travel? when your mental health needs to be looked after. I think it think its how a person deals their mental health that counts
