Nearest thing to sarcasm lol
And it is not wrong. The bank is not surprosed to 'have benefit money'.
It is good advice to put your benefit money with a bank that you have no debt with.
Still wrong ! The bank is not supposed to have money that is deemed essential to live on. Not all benefit money is deemed essential ! That's blatently obvious as proved by those who buy cigs and alcohol with such benefits !
I agree, put your money into another unconnected bank.0 -

what a git you are. you've just assumed they're 'benefitters' and screwing the system to their own end. clearly not. if it's not constructive criticism, it's just criticism. OP didn't ask for that - OP asked for help and advice.
Agree TOTALLY MissieMog. These threads are for help and support; not judgemental b*tchy comments.
For anyone who has been following the tragic news story about the family in Hampshire, relatively close to where I live, it seems there is a strong possibility that the father was facing bankruptcy and felt he had no other way out:

I'm sure PC Gabriel Kent really meant well - but one should always be very careful before posting mean comments to people whose circumstances one doesn't FULLY know. What may seem like a relatively mild verbal 'slap' to one person could be the final straw that breaks the camel's back to another, more vulnerable person.
Kimboward - I'm sorry that I cannot offer you any specific advice (although, if you are just about scraping by with your Barclays account, I can't see a reason why they should have done this). However, I wish you and your family all the very best and hope that things pick up soon.

How so. Elaborate?
Even the job centre advise all benefit money to go to a new bank account with no debt.
Nobody is surpose to save money while on benefits unless they are 'working' the system.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Can I ask what sort of bank account you had with Barclays? Was it one that used to be with the Woolwich per chance?
Only ask as that is the type we have. If it's one of those where you have be depositing a set amount into each month, then that may well be the problem, but the bank should not close the account without giving you written notice and the chance to speak to someone in the local branch.
When we first had this account, we were overdrawn with the Woolwich every month and were always in same kind of situation that you mention. I broke a bone in my foot in January this year and was out of work 9 weeks. Could only get SSP and no help from anywhere else as we had previously earned too much to qualify.
Well we have managed through being careful to fully pay the overdraft off, which I had not realised and it was only when I asked someone from telephone call centre that I found that out.
So your first port of call must be to go see the right bod at the local Barclays, then CAB or national debt consumer debt as they can be helpful.
If you have rent arrears or mortgage arrears, have you ever worked for a firm who has a benevolent fund, even if you never joined in it and they can prove you worked there, they may help. Also depending on where you live, your water company may have a trust fund that you could ask for some help. Anglian water does. We were not in enough debt for them to help us out in 2004. But I was in the civil service and their benevolent fund cleared my mortgage arrears in a one off grant payment. Paid direct to creditor by the way.
Hope that this might be some help.

Perhaps you can clarify a few things OP, you stated the account was "closed", is this actually the case? Or have Barclays removed the overdraft and passed the account to collections? If you have an outstanding overdraft, it is more likely (although admittedly I'm not familiar with Barclays processes) the account is suspended/ blocked/ put on hold until you repay the arrears, at which point the account may be closed.
If we were to take your post of face value a closed account should not accept incoming credits (unless the sort code and account number has been re-assigned, which is unlikely). What happens when you send money to a closed account? I'm not entirely sure, probably bounces back to DWP or sits in some suspense account at Barclays.
The only reason I'm splitting hairs over the term "closed" is because you've made no mention of the banks terms for repayment of the overdraft. Normally this would be the main concern of someone who's struggling financially (i.e. "Where do I find £500?").
Once you've spoken to Barclays again hopefully you can give more details.Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.0
