Exactly how did you send it as a direct payment or as a gift?

If you sent it as a gift then you can't recall it as it does warn you that it is considered a personal payment and asks you to double check the details are correct. If you just sent payment (ie so recipient would pay fees) then you can charge it back via paypal.

I sent it as a gift, as it was a gift. I did put the correct email address in but somehow it defaulted to the person from ebay rather than my friend.
If you gave me 5 quid in the Dog and Duck, the £5 would remain in the Dog and Duck. Only problem is, it will be in the till and I will be quite happy.

Why should the recipient repay you?[/QUOTE]

Well I made a genuine mistake so morally they should return it but as they've igonred me for 3 days, I'm assuming they're going to keep it. It's not a huge amount but still, I could hardly afford to contribute to the friends gift in the first place to be honest, let alone be down double the amount.
  • I agree you made a mistake, but why should the recipient reapay this. If you sent it to my paypal account and requested payment to be paid back, I would do so as I use it for my business and this is goodwill.

I am sure that if you requested the money back, any reasonable business would do the same. If it was an indiviiual, I understanmd this may be a lot harder to do so.

If recipient ignores your polite requests for the payment to be returned you might consider trying small claims. However a win is not guaranteed and even if you do win repayment is not automatic as you would have to take further steps to recover funds.

You might also want to consider the cost of trying small claims before you decide whether it is worth the risk.

It was only for £10 so I wouldn't bother with the hassle of the small claims. :)

That's why I don't want to hassle them. I've emailed Paypal to see if they can suggest anything. I know it's only a small amount but every little counts!

Actually i read about a case recently about someone who did a bank transfer online. They filled in the details etc and after the transfer went through they noticed two digits were mixed up!

So they contacted the bank, they claimed nothing they could do etc etc

So to cut a long story short. The case went to small claims court and it was ruled as it was user error, it was a genuine mistake, but it doesn't constitute as theft as long as the recipient who received the money, doesn't spend it.

Usually before I do any sort of transfer, I always send them £1 and get the person to tell me they've received that before transferring any larger amounts!

In the OP's case, hopefully the person who has received your £10 will be kind enough to send it back :D
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!

They may have a paypal email address that they only check when they are expecting emails/dosh...so give it time.

This kind of thing is why I will never have a PayPal account - ever!
