I accidently sent money to the wrong person via paypal...

May be the wrong place to put, but couldn't find a relevent area.

Last night I was sending a personal transfer to a friend to club together to buy a baby gift for a mutual friend. Somehow it went to the wrong person- someone that paid a small amount into my PP to purchase some kids shoes from me via ebay a few weeks ago.

PP say in the help section that I must contact the other person and request a refund, I have contacted the person via Ebay and Email and not had a reply yet.

Does anyone know if their is anything I can do or will I just have to accept that it's gone?

  • When I saw the title I was going to suggest e-mailing them and asking for the money back, but you've already done that and they ignored you. Well... can't you contest the payment or something? Or do a credit card chargeback, if you didn't have money in your PayPal account so it was taken directly from your bank? I don't know if PayPal like people doing chargebacks after transferring money using their system though.

I already had the money in my paypal account, so it didn't come out of the bank. I tried to cancel it straight away but it wouldn't allow me to. I could maybe send a 'request money' but there is no saying that they will do that anyway and according to PP it will be very easy for them to press the refund button. They could be on holiday and I don't want to bombard them. Can't believe I was so stupid.

I did exactly the same a few weeks ago. I emailed the lady in question and after a couple of days she refunded my payment. If it was only last night, I guess they may not have seen your email yet? How about contacting them through ebay instead? Their ebay ID may be linked to another email address.

Exactly how did you send it as a direct payment or as a gift?

If you sent it as a gift then you can't recall it as it does warn you that it is considered a personal payment and asks you to double check the details are correct. If you just sent payment (ie so recipient would pay fees) then you can charge it back via paypal.

  • If you gave me 5 quid in the Dog and Duck, the £5 would remain in the Dog and Duck. Only problem is, it will be in the till and I will be quite happy.

Why should the recipient repay you?

I clicked you off my ignore list because I wondered if you had anything worth saying. But it's still the old crapp, so you're now back on it.

arenaman is right, they have to return the money or else they have stolen it. It's the same with banks transferring money by mistake into someone's account. It has to be returned.

It is all very well saying it 'has' to be returned but paypal cannot recipient to do so and if this went as a gift then OP will have to prove to a small claims court that it wasn't in fact a gift.

The important thing here is how was it sent, that will determine the ease of recovering the money.

:rotfl:Do you actually understand the concept of theft? The receiver of the money hasn't stolen it. Just to explain it in simple terms. If your walking along the street and someone gives you £5. Then 5 minutes later they come back and say your the wrong person can they have it back, You say no as they gave the money to you, That's not theft as someone gave you the money you can be asked as much as they want but if you refuse to return the money nothing can be done. The police won't care as as far as they are concerned the money has been gifted not stolen.

The OP as the person they sent the money to was on there account anyway so it's difficult to even argue a email address mistake. If the person receiving the money refuses you can tell them they have to return it but if the refuse there is little they can do.

As for your bank mistake transfer thats not a good comparison as problems like that are set in banking law and the source and reasons for the money being put into an account can be easily traced and audited.

Ignorance is bliss, I really did not know people cared so much to only listen to one side of the story. I am honoured by the fact I cannot be of assitance to the likes of you, and I trust that you will, if you ask enough people, will find strenght if they agree with you.
