Want to replace 5ft fence with 6ft

We would really like some more privacy in our backgarden from our neighbours..
I'd like to replace the fence with a higher one, to do this however I'm unsure about the following...
Neighbour has a prefab 'conservatory' type lean to built right up to the boundary with little windows at the top which would open up over our current 5ft fence. If i were to install a 6ft fence they wouldn't be able to open the window... As it's our land, they don't have the right to open the window right?
They rarely do open it anyway but I wanted to check first...
Also, the fence/and posts are fine, not rotten. Would it be too much of a bodgit and scarper to replace just the panels which would leave a bit of a gap between the panels at the top. Current posts are a couple of inches higher than the current fence. Don't really want to replace posts as would add to the hassle of digging up etc as we believe them to be concreted in.. Or ideally is there a way to add a bit more height to the post...
Thanks in advance

could you add trellis on to your exsisting fencing, are your nieghbours unreasonable it would be better if you could tell them your plans to increase your fence hieght and say it is to increase security but remember most places you need consent to go over 6ft0

Can't comment on the conservatory but been there done it with the fence. I had a 5ft fence at the back I wanted replacing when I was trying to sell my property. According to the deeds it wasn't my responsibility but went halves with the neighbour (less than £100 each). I put 6 arched panels up that were 6ft in the middle and over 5ft at the ends and higher than the concreted in wooden posts. My father made a 6inch extension to the wooden posts which we dowelled and glued in and put a nice cap on the top to finish off. It didn't look right without the extensions , you can see the join but it's not too bad. Sometime later one of the posts needed replacing due to wind damage and I was actually surprised that it wasn't as difficult to dig out as I had expected. As they use to say on Blind Date (sorry), the decision is yours......0

I am not sure why your neighbour should expect you to provide the space for their windows to open into. It seems to me a bit of a cheek that they had it built like that in the first place. The idea of adding a trellis to the top of the fence makes a lot of sense. I read somewhere that trellis on top of a fence tends to deter intruders, because they know that their weight is likely to break the trellis down. Thus creating a lot of noise.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
I thought of trellis but the reason i was thinking fence was for the privacy (you can still see through trellis) rather than security, tho this would be an added bonus. It's our fence so don't expect them to pay or anything..
As for the 'conservatory'. It's is a bit of a makeshift contraption put on, we think, by the neighbours dad. The house is housing association and they've been there longer than us (we've been here 4 years now) and whilst they are sposed to be moving on in the future (3 kids and them in 2 bed house) I wanted to be sure that if it kicks off that they now can't open their window that we are in the right so to speak.
I know we could grow something up the trellis but hoping for the privacy sooner rather than later...0 -
Hmm, i wonder if this might do the trick. No need for mucking about with fence posts etc....
Thoughts anyone?

Ooo, feel positive that we could soon have a garden to relax in..0 -
Hi,
what length of fence, were you gonna put it along the top some way?0 -
No, as it's 2m high I would just attach it to the fence to cover it completely.. It would give us the extra foot height without the hassle, and I think would look quite nice.. Swayed towards the willow one at the mo and is dark like our fence so added bonus..0

Fence is about 4.5 panels long currently.0
