BT own Telefonica? I bet they wish they did. Where did you get that from?

As mentioned elsewhere on this site you should find in the very near future it is cheap to end BT contracts - from just £2 per month for each remaining month.

This change has been enforced by OFCOM. I cannot post links but if you search for the following in Google you should find a news item dated 17th June 2010 on the OFCOM site:

Cheaper charges for UK consumers to end phone contracts

Indeed, however I bet that BT are working on other ways that they can stitch up their customers.

It is time Ofcom stopped all of these companies insisting on long contracts to stitch their customers up, of course I think that we all know that isn't going to happen.

Really, unless you want the free o2 home phone International calls etc. I'd stay put. WHY pay to leave and get nowt for it!!

Next year, sure there will be sign up deals (cashback/sign up or negociate) so what's the hurry???

I am in the same boat BUT against my nature I am being patient to make the jump if I decide to!!!

I don't really have a problem with long contracts; buyer beware. The terms are (or certainly ought to be) clear.

I think part of the issue is customer apathy in so far as both IDNET and The Post Office offer one month installations (indeed IDNET says something along the lines of "we want you to stay so we won't force a long contract"), yet a huge swathe of people seem to think "I need a phone line. Therefore I need to get in touch with BT".

It would help, though, if line suppliers had to also offer line connection. For some reason not known to me, The Post Office and IDNET are happy to organise this, yet companies like Sky and O2 simply cannot be bothered.

I even had O2 call me about home phone - I explained we haven't used our line for 2 years as it's useless for broadband, and invited them to do better. "You'll need to get BT to activate the line...." - for heaven's sake.

Oh I see its October. Maybe I stay till october. Pain in bum but better than £60. Thanks.

Why do you think BT does not own telephonica. I don't think they own 100% anymore but they have a sizable if not majority stake. Use google and look at which companies BT have a share in. Its huge!

They have never owned 100% of it. It was denationalised in Spain in 1997 and the largest shareholders are Spanish banks and pension funds. The largest of these owns about 6% according to Wikipedia, so BT's holding, if any, is tiny.
The only connection I can see is that BT used to own O2.
