BT to O2 - worth the penalty?

Hi I was wondering if people could help me work out whether it's worth it to switch from BT to O2 and pay the £58 termination charges.

I already have O2 broadband and mobile, and their home phone package seems like a good deal, since I don't use the phone much - need it for broadband.

I have a Evening and Weekend contract with BT until April 2011. They say the termination charges are £58+ not including 'other charges that may be due'. I can't imagine what other charges may be due as I have been up to date with direct debit payments.

I was wondering whether to stay with BT, or bite the bullet and pay to switch, partly because I rang BT customer service and they were really quite rude.

Any feedback or advice is appreciated. Thanks.

My experiences of BT suggest that paying £58 to get away from them is pretty much bargain of the year. Go for it!

Agreed, however O2 also have long contracts and charge extra for caller display, shop around, there are better telephone suppliers available that do not make these additional charges or insist on long contracts.

Rather depends how long you have left on your BT minimum contract?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

One thing I have to say for O2 is that they've got good customer service, which has been my experience with their broadband and mobile phone accounts - something pretty wanting in BT as so many posts on this forum indicate.

I rang O2 to ask if they could offer me anything to 'ease the pain' of BT's termination charges if I decided to stick with the switch and they offered me 3 months off my broadband.

I'm sure there may be better deals price-wise elsewhere, but customer service does tip the balance for people without a lot of time to trawl through every package.

If you sign up online then you get the first 3 months free anyway, so the haven't done you any great favours. If you sign up by phone you also miss the cashback.

Thanks. I am aware of that and that perhaps I should've looked some more but given my time is limited they offered and I took it. In contrast, I rang BT and they basically shrugged.

You are going knowhere mate:-) Its all a scam? Who owns O2? and who owns them?
Yeah you guest it BT own telefonica who in turn own 02. So although switching saves you cash and you will get better service you are going knowhere:-)

I am doing the same switch now. Its probable same difference in terms of fiance but O2 are alot better. Goodbye long q's to speak to(press 5) someone(press 1) who(press 2) speak to someone (press 2)in India who does not understand me(conection terminated). O2 do use oveseas too but only at night. So you can phone at 5 its fine.
When I switched I got a babe from aberdeen on the phone who was worth losing the free 3 months for:-). BT sent me a semi intimadating letter then called me with a really s**t offer to stay that felt like a threat. BT should change there slogan to add in a disclaimer. "Its good to talk to anyone but us"
