sorry, yes i did have avast, i uninstalled it before when i told to try and re-install virgin !!

erm thanks but i did follow your advice actually, the search feature would not work either in safe mode or normal mode, and c cleaner did not help either

i followed preety much all the advice on here and am very grateful to all the people who helped !!

Well, does the search work in normal mode? If it does delete as I said. Did you do the registry deletions? Reboot after.
