Was doing my weekly shop at Asda last week and popped to the bakery as usual to pick up a few of the fresh cheese and onion pasties. The label says 'suitable for vegetarians' (which i am)

However, got home, had the pie at a late evening snack and i nearly choked on what was clearly a piece of chicken. felt sick and repulsed. I spoke to the complaints department and they offered me a refund on the pies. I feel very hard done by given the severity of what happened. I dont have a lot of consumer confidence, so can anyone give me any advice on how to pursue this further.

I spend around £60 per week at asda, was aboslutely revolted :(

I am SO glad I make my own pies!
On occasions in restaurants, I have been served veggie food and it has contained meat. I have removed it from my mouth and left the rest of the meal, I don't complain these days as once before someone took the plate away, took the bits of meat off and returned it to me thinking I would want to eat that, so I had to complain again and I found the whole thing such an embarrasment. Recently I dined in an "Indian" where the staff are Muslims and they served a tandoori meat and used the same spoon for my veg curry. I found it offputting and couldn't eat my meal. I never complained but I wonder what they would say if they ate a veg dish and found a trace of PORK in it:eek:

  • Back to the question...

My parents once found a piece of ham on their vegetarian pizza at Sainsbury's... they took it back to the customer service desk and were offered a £20 voucher.

I once found a large green (dead) bug in a box of Tesco Value orange juice... I took it back to the instore customer services with a written letter and was given a £10 voucher on the spot, plus a follow-up letter some weeks later explaining the measures they were taking to ensure it wouldn't happen again.

Last year, some kind of crazy bug (kind of like a small cricket) jumped out of an airproof jar of Asda stuffed vine leaves. I took it back to the shop and showed the lady the, then dead, bug so she ran around squealing at all her colleagues, even calling them over on the tannoy, and gave me a refund plus £5 voucher.

    There's a theme

Although I feel remotely sick about the thought of insects in my orange juice... I did have a bit of a giggle that a piece of ham was worth more in compensation than a dead bug in orange juice or a live cricket in a jar!:)

Can vegetarians eat meat if it's very thinly sliced?

  • I dont think it is acceptable for them to say that it is no big deal and just refund the cost of the pie, if we had been talking about someone eating meat which was not allowed by religion or allergies then it would be different.
Have you managed to get any further with this? I hope you have, i certainly would take up legal action. Ok in the grand scheme of life it isnt that big of a deal, but supermarkets still need to be told that consumers will not allow things like this to keep happening and if i were you i would make a big fuss about it.

You'd go to court, possibly involving solicitors, barristers, judges, lots and lots of time, money and effort and maybe even the police (who knows?) over a piece of chicken???!

A massive over reaction surely? The supermarkets sell hundreds of thousends of items a day and the number of times that one is contaiminated with the wrong product is probably less than 0.000001% (yes I'm guessing but you get the point!)
