IF and a BIG IF, I had to pick one, I would go for the VW.

Although I plan to always remain with Ford now - parts sold widely and cheap, easy to work on and fair priced insurance on them

Each VW seems to get more troublesome with each passing year, you have been warned. VAG group (Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda et al.) haven't knocked out anything with a spectacular reputation for reliability for years in my opinion.

Mazda would be my personal choice. The new KA is basically an old Punto in a dress, nothing to get remotely exceited about, it's all old FIAT underneath.
