Unless you've gone with cowboys, they should see sense and pay for the cars to be cleaned to maintain a good reputation for the company. I'd certainly expect something if my car was covered in concrete dust and grit by tradesmen.

Tell him that the Police are looking for some escaped dust and would be interested in any photos or CCTV. There may also be a reward for information leading to its capture. Put a "Wanted" poster on the lampost outside his house

We once had a complaint from some arrogant so and so about dust on his "expensive" car from some work we were doing. He also made a point of telling us how it cost more than we could earn in a year.

"Oh, no, that's terrible" I said and asked to have a look. Sure enough, a big merc with dust on it.

"Yes, that's terrible" I said shaking my head. "All that money and it wont even start, so that you can park it around the corner" Then when his eyes opened wide, I added "Do you want a push?"

The gist of his response was that he declined my kind offer

It depends on how dirty you made his car. If its just a little dirt then sorry and a bottle of wine as a gesture. If its totally messy then you should get it cleaned. If it was me I would only complain to you if it was a real mess. You hired the company so you should deal with them not him. I used to live in a block of flats. I totally gutted it and re plastered. My work men did not leave a single mark on the shared stare as they were professionals. One of my neighbours hired people to plaster 1 room and left a coating of 1-2 mm of dust all over the stairs. I was fairly impressed at the level of incompetence. If you hire cowboys then you need to fix the mess they make on your behalf?

Its not worth falling out over, give him a couple of quid to go to the car wash, did you warn the neighbours that you were having the work done, and that there could be dust and mess etc, so they could move their cars, close their windows etc?
    Pawpurrs x ;)

You should show consideration to your neighbours when you get building work done. I think you should have either cleaned the neighbours car yourself or paid to get it valeted.:)

Offer to wash the car, or you can give them the builders name & number.
