I have a Creative Zen Stone which is 2gb but there is a 4gb version. It comes in different colours and has various accessories like colour cases and armbands. Has been very robust. Plays itunes and mp3s.

It costs around 25 pounds which means you don't get too concerned if it gets lost or broken or nicked (by another kid). It has neat white headset like an ipod.

I tried one of the Chinese ipod clones - mine was hopeless never worked, instructions were unintelligible and there was no online help. You might be lucky with one but it is a gamble.
