ALDI and LIDL had a couple of nice Mp4 players the looked good for the money. I have an ipod but hardly use. I use spotify now. I would say chances are a 8 year old will break.
  • Although I can truely understand how your son would want an apple touch and nothing else and my first idea is the ipod shuffle which had the clips - although slightly dated now (which he might dislike), I thought they were just under 50 pounds. Actually the new ipod shuffle starts at 46 pounds...

Another idea are mobile phones - quite a lot of phone now can act as music players so that avenue might be interesting to look at especially if you have a contract needing to be renewed etc.

Also worth considering is how much music he has - so maybe discuss if he wants a more expensive ipod which might hold less music or something cheaper but can hold more music - possibly through the use of SD cards etc.
  • I bought a 4gb Ipod Nano from Ebay a few months ago for £30. Although I could have bought a cheaper MP3 player new, I particularly needed an Ipod as my car has an Ipod connector to play through the head unit.

TBH, I would favour a second hand Ipod over a cheaper (and maybe less supported) brand, it would then have a decent(ish) px value against a Touch at somewhere like CEX/Cash Converters.

i have to agree at that price point a second hand ipod might be a good idea since you do have all the accessories for ipods which can make life easier in future, although i do fully understand your thoughts on turning him to another of Mr Jobs's cash cows at such a young age
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Am I the only person wondering about damaging the poor boy's ears?

At 8 years old he won't take long to turn the volume restrictor off!

My DD is turning 8 this year and asked for one, I have said no, she isn't old enough, for both her hearing and the fact that she will lose/break it.

Sansa players are a good choice. I personally have a Sansa Fuze. It has a larger screen, far better sound quality than an Ipod (though you need to hace really good headphones to pick out the differences) and it has a micro SD expansion slot allowing you to increase the capacity from 8gb out of the box to I believe 32gb.

Mine was about £70 but I've seen them cheaper since.
  • I would recommend the Sansa Fuze - we have 3 of these (I use Napster-to-go with each of them) and they are great -have a wheel just like an ipod (if you laddy cares about such things!) - £39.99 from Amazon - even my oh (whos 58 and seriously challenged with any new technology!) can use it easily

I recommend the Sansa Clip Plus or the Fuze. You can add memory to both with a microSD.

Sansa Fuze is also good if you want video as well though the screen is too small for me. 8gb for 60 quid, can't argue: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sansa-Fuze-8gb-Player-Black/dp/B0019JOD68/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1280136158&sr=1-1

    4gb for £40.
