It's well known is it? Well i didn't know it. And it wasn't stated anywhere on the shop floor, on the website or on my receipt. Doesn't make it very "well known" in my books.
Where do they state that their bed is King size? They do, however give the exact measurements which correspond to continental bed sizes, something that's your responsibility to check when buying a mattress, particularly from another store.

I agree with baza - it would be a lot easier to change your mattress. Ikea sell mattresses and bedding to fit their beds and their prices are OK too. I've had 3 Ikea beds and always bought their own mattresses - never had a problem with any of them. It does sound like you've made an assumption about it being King Size as they quote actual measurements and dont use the term 'king size' in their material at all as far as I can tell

I've just remembered who you are and that you're very young and inexperienced, so I apologise if my replies were a bit brusque, even if factually correct. However, you do always have to check bed measurements, even if not buying from IKEA.

    I'm intrigued!

Ikea sell continental size beds, as they are a scandinavian company. They do display their sizes on both their web site, as well as in the stores.

For anyone else who is unsure:

    UK SIZES
    Small Single 2'6" (75cm) x 6'3" (190cm)
    Single 3' (90cm) x 6'3" (190cm)
    Small Double 4' (120cm) x 6'3" (190cm)
    Double 4'6" (135cm) x 6'3" (190cm)
    King Size 5' (150cm) x 6'6" (200cm)
    Super King Size 6' (180cm) x 6'6" (200cm)

    CONTINENTAL SIZES (Ikea)

    Single 3' (90cm) x 6'6" (200cm)
    Double 4'9" (140cm) x 6'6" (200cm)
    King Size 5'3" (160cm) x 6'6" (200cm)
    Superking Size 6' (180cm) x 6'6" (200cm)

If the mattress has been unpacked then it is unlikely that the retailer will take it back. If they will, then exchange it for a continental king size (they should do them).

I wouldn't buy an Ikea mattress as the build quality is terrible, which is why many UK manufacturers also supply continental sizes.

You wont get any sympathy here I'm afraid, but they are right you haven't got a leg to stand on.

Shame the people on this site aren't kinder to people though.

Would a big hug make the bed shrink a little?

hi , i bought an ikea bed last week which is why this thread caught my attention , but the difference is i bought the bed and then thought i would go out and get a mattress for it , i then found i had to go back to ikea to buy a mattress as no one else sells them ( or rather sells them as cheap) , i can quite understand how you came unstuck .
also 'continental sizes' which continent ? i now live in france and the sizes are still not ikea sizes.
and does king size really mean anything? is there a standard size king? or queen for that matter
your best bet would be to stick it in the car , take it back to ikea and collect your refund , then look around for a kingsize bed frame and headboard etc second hand , maybe end up saving money , good luck
my favourite food is spare ribs
