Getting a new MOT well before its due....

Hi,
Stupid question time....I'm trying to sell my car with 6 months MOT, but I'd like to sell it with 12 months, can I take it to a garage and get a new MOT now replacing the old one..????

Yes. You can get an MOT every day if you so desire.

    Aye, it's something I do.

I get a chunk of money every October, so I make sure my MoT expires when I have this chunk of money lands.

For example, I've recently bought a new motor where the MoT expires next March - I'll get it MoTd in October so that gives me a new 12 month ticket until the following October :)

You can do this, however should it fail, despite the fact your old MOT still had 6 months to run, the car will then NOT be road legal.
So when I take my car for an new MOT two weeks before the old one expires then I can't legally drive it out of there to get it fixed because it isn't road legal?

    Jamie, you are wrong!

If the car fails the MOT and still has a current one, it still has it's old MOT on it.

I did it this year, I took my car with 3 weeks MOT left to my local garage and asked them this question, they said if it failed it would still be ROAD LEGAL.

OP, if the car fails it will still be road legal to use with it's current MOT!

Unless the fail reveals an item that is dangerous, in that case the car should not be used on public roads.

I think you need to go back to bed Jamie, the car still has an MOT until the expiry date on the old one.

Technically thats correct yes, if its failed an MOT then its old certificate isnt worth the paper its written on WRONG, obviously most people get the vehicle repaired then retested at the place it failed at.

The best way around this however, especially in the case of the original poster, is to do what i did when i was in the same situation, i went to a local small independant and asked him to do a Mock MOT, and a Mock MOT albiet being an old fashioned outdated idea does mean that the results dont go on the system, meaning if it fails its not on the database that the test ever took place.

But in my case it passed, so he charged me for one test and did me a certificate.

    Incorrect

If a car fails an MOT while having a current MOT test against it, it is still road legal to use on a public road

If a car fails an MOT today then that means the car is not roadworthy doesnt it. Fact. Doesnt matter if it has 1 day or 364 days remaining on it.

If it has a current MOT that it has passed, and is still current, that one is still affected, just because it failed a MOT today, and not last week makes no difference at all.

The current MOT is still valid, weather or not the MOT fails tomorrow or next week, the car will still be road legal

CORRECTION: I've just checked it. If it fails within a month of the original expiry date then its still legal to use for the duration of the old ticket.Correct, partly

But that does mean my comment of it failing 6 months before the old ticket is up is still 100% true and correct.Wrong

    Thank you.

    No, still wrong

Keep looking Jamie, you will find it soon on Google ;)

The car is still legal to drive even if 6 months in to an MOT you get a new one and it fails, the remaining MOT is still valid

Read my above post you blind bat. I have corrected it. Meaning the "if it fails 2 weeks before..." post i was wrong on.

But in the case of the OP, if it fails 6 months before then its not road legal. Which means i was right.

    Excuse me??!

Don't go having a paddy with me!!
Think you should correct your post with that insult, don't you??

You are wrong, sorry but you are, simple as.

OP please don't listen to this guy, he runs a back street car garage ripping people off on there MOT's!

Your current MOT will still be valid if it fails the new one, regardless of the remaining amount of time left on it ;)
