Can this be right?

I changed over to a water meter in early September 2009 in an effort to economise. I got my first bill (estimated) in December for 33 cubic meters of water and another last week, again estimated, for 64 cubic meters. So, from September 2009 to the end of June 2010, I have used an estimated 97 cubic meters of water. I checked the reading on my water meter today to compare my actual usage to Veolia's estimated usage. The dial read 00010, not counting the last few red numbers.

Does this mean that I have only used 10 cubic meters of water instead of 97 or is there some other calculation involved to arrive at the figure that appears on the bill? I have been very frugal with the water and am the sole occupant in my flat but it does seem a huge difference. If it is correct then I am probably entitled to a refund :)

Water meters can be really good if you intend on using a small amount of water and are the only person living at the property.

However, they are no good for people having baths every day and generally no good for couples.

Water meters can work out cheap but they can also work out costing you more.

Regards your refund, you can contact the water company and request such, weather you will get it is a totally different question which I do not hold the answer to as it's down to them.

I would have though you were entitled to a refund however you should have contacted them sooner instead of almost a year on.

Just ring them up with the correct reading and they will produce a new bill and either let the money sit there to pay off future bills or ask for it back

Yes, call in your readings, and ask them why they are estimating them when they are easily read.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not so much concerned about the refund as I am about whether I am calculating my bill correctly or not. It seems very straightforward compared to working out my electricity usage.

But we don't know the meter is easily read. If it is internal with no touchpad then it is not that simple.

OP. Yes it is the straight forward. The black numbers are what is used and if it is 00010 then you have used 10 cm3 in one year which is very low but as you say if you are single and hardly there then that can easily be explained.

Email the water company and supply your reading ( cheaper then calling) and also ask for a refund, there should be no issue at all seeing as you have just been billed.

I'm presuming that if the OP managed to read it, then it is easily read?

LOL it may be easily read by the customer, but if its an internal or in the back yard for example a meter reader may not be able to get to the meter to read it !
