Thanks for that Roberto. So, in our case, the rent is £91 per week. We get LHA of £44, leaving us to pay £47 (all rounded to the nearest £1)

Does that mean our eligible rent will go down to £78.26? And we would then pay approx £60 per week? If that is the case, then we will then meet the criteria for free prescriptions, dental treatment, glasses etc, which we currently have to pay for as we get a few pounds more than the threshold for full help. So, not really saving the government any money...

Don't want to disappoint - and I may be entirely wrong on this - but I don't think your housing benefit counts as your income so it will not affect whether or not you qualify for free prescriptions etc.

I said "let me get this straight" tounge in cheek.

What I don't understand, is why those with a vested interest in this will think up absolutely anything, even those kind of ludicrous suggestions, but won't even mention the word "reduce rent".

People are not going to be moving en masse to different areas and be graced with loads of empty homes to move into, and landlords won't suddenly be graced with a load of new renters on their doorsteps falling like angels from above, and they live happily ever after.

A shift in the rental values is all that it takes.
are you totally stupid or only when you post on this forum?

what could be an issue is the removal of the £££ that were subsidised for these tenants.
not sure if it will be a big effect on a micro level.
what do you think that post meant? if you don't understand just say so.

this bit makes me realise how limited you actually are - by your logic it's like me saying that those that can't afford to buy are the only ones that can see property values falling and nothing else.

My view is that housing benefit should be limited to the average cost of a LA property to which the claimant is entitled to in the area where the claimant is living. This could be phased over say 5 years. The current system, as others have posted, just pushes rent and house prices up. Any subsidy scheme has the same effect.

But currently the LHA broad rental market rate is pegged at the average cost, isn't it, so it operates now precisely as you are saying it should be changed to?! It is at the 50th percentile so is the median (i.e.) average for the size and lcoation.

How many times do we have to say it?

MOST PEOPLE ON HB ARE WORKING!
How do I get/claim HB then? I thought that if you are working you couldn't claim benefits (it doesn't make sense to me). I'd appreciate to have the government to pay my rent.

So if my rent is £73 a week and I get full HB and IS with DLA, will I have to pay any of it. My sis works for the council and seemed to think that I would.

Well gosh Graham, if it's so easy I wonder why everyone doesn't just take that approach?

    £150bn annual deficit? No problem!!!

A 10% rise in tax revenue is all that it takes.

    Company failing? No problem!!!!

A 30% reduction in the employees wage packet is all that it takes.

    Pension crisis? No problem!!!

A 300% rise in National Insurance contributions is all that it takes.

I found this quote, and immediately thought of you...

Scarecrow: I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy: How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
