ive heard that some routers store DNS data, to help differenciate between a local site (hosted on a pc inside the network) and an external site, just a thought...

windows holds a dns cache, but that's no good unless you type the 192.432.45.3-type address into your browser, and even then it will depend on how your ISP handles IP addresses. DNS is basically a translation between www.google.co.uk-type adresses and the numbers-only IP address format, which is why you need the server to translate for you

Never heard of domestic routers storing DNS data, even if it is just for local area (most LAN's are set up using IP addressing anyway).
There is of course no harm in restarting the router, but if it is a DNS issue (which is what all the symptoms say) then the problem will still be there.

If Andrea wants to post back and confirm what happened when she followed the link I gave to the Next website, that will confirm beyond all doubt whether it is a lookup issue or not.

so pc's dont have names that need translating then?

look i dont want to start a discussion as it doesnt help the main issue does it?

maybe i was working with more business type routers that had DNS tools to assist small offices who host intranets.

Well I seem to have a DNS problem (using jargon now starting to be scared) as I could access the Next site ( and saw a nice dress:)) although it had the same problem as before - waiting for http etc etc at bottom left of screen.

Could I reset the laptop to original settings as I don't have much saved on it and I can easily reinstall what I need but is that likely to cure the problem ??

were not falling out, merely discussing :P

we havent descended into petty name calling yet so were all good lol

if it is a DNS issue then theres not much you can do as like they said, its something to do with your ISP

If it's a DNS issue you can use other DNS servers, bypassing your ISP's ones completely.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

Restoring your laptop is not going to help, the problem is down to your ISP.

    You can either...

    1. Call their tech support department and talk to a script monkey who may very well know less than you.

    2. Bypass their DNS completely and use something like OpenDNS.

Overlooking any possible DNS issue, have you checked to make sure your Internet Settings are correct in your web browser. Is there a tick against automatically detect settings?

Internet Browsers will hang at this point aswell if it's looking at an incorrect address....

As for DNS, the routers get it from the ISP, there have been a few posts on this forum before for some of the crappier ISPs assigning it directly to the PC or changing the PC settings as if it were in a DMZ. Such as TalkTalk and I think also Orange.

The above can be found out doing start - run - cmd - ipconfig /all and posting the results here, that would tell you in about 2 secs flat if it has the wrong DNS information.

Side Note : What firewall aswell, if you have Comodo, they have their own DNS servers

bob, as far as I'm aware, most domestic routers will only hold limited local IP addresses, for those devices connected to them, rather than a full internet-type dns table and cache. Would be interested to learn more from your experience. If you have any more info/links, I'd like to read up.

What about the possibility of the DNS entry on computer has been not setup/hijacked to a rogue machine? Could double check to verify it is set to get it over DHCP.
