I am a little confused are tv licenses for 12 months or 11? or do they run by month regardless of what date you buy them.

    xx

It runs for 12 months from the expiry of the last one.

Seems like it runs from the fist of the month in which you first buy it, again like car road tax. So if there is a gap then wait till the 1st of the next month and keep your fingers crossed.:rolleyes2

Whoops didnt realise there was a page two, just clicked on quote.....

  • Thought this tip was good enough to eat! Well at least good enough to be nominated for the post of the month anyway. Think it should be in the weekly tips too but no idea if theres any nomination system for that. Cheers Barnabee!

    That's the official answer.
A good tip for new students starting uni this month is to try and purchase a licence on the 1st October. You can then claim back the minimum 3 months worth of unexpired fees next year for July, August and September 2007 provided you are not going to be remaining at your student residence during the summer.
Totally agree that the TV licence system of payment calculations is a rip off.

this is a truly shocking story. I hope it gets sorted out.

Another con is that they assume you have a TV even if you don''t. So if you move house and ignore their letters, as you don't have a TV, and then get one, and apply for a licence, they will backdate it to the date you moved in. So I'm 'getting rid of' my TV for another month so that we'll be equal.
for more info check out www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk . You'll find me there.
New Year's Resolution: Post less unnecessary posts. (and that was 2007)

yes, I realise I may appear cold and heartless a lot of the time.

I hate their back-dating practice. A good way around it is to use a pseudonym every time you get a TV license -- my current license is in the name of Saddam Hussein; at a previous address I once had a license in the name of Osama bin Laden; and my first ever license was for Doctor Who!

The BBC would investigate your complaint, as the "TV Licencing" gestapo is nothing to do with them. It collects the money for HM gov, then shares it out amongst themselves, gov and then gives BBC what gov decides.

That may have previously been the case, but it is not now

    http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/aboutus/index.jsp

"As a result of The Broadcast Act 1990, the BBC were made responsible for licence administration. TV Licensing is a trading name used by entities contracted by the Licensing Authority (the BBC) to administer the collection of television licence fees and enforcement of the television licensing system. The majority of the administration of TV Licensing is contracted to Capita Business Services Ltd."

Same situation on the vent board i think. Something needs doing here.

Is there an update on this yet?
  • There is an update this very moment!

Despite having posted and e-mailed my complaint the TV licensing have failed to respond to my complaint within 8 working days - not even an acknowledgement. Despite the fact it states on their website that they answered all 18,000 complaints received last year within this timeframe.

On a better note our MP is now involved. He agrees that its not acceptable and has written to the chief exec of TV licensing asking them to investigate - and we all know that there is nothing like an MP for getting things moving!

On a more personal note my TV license is now being paid from my boyfriends account and not mine, so now its my turn to get threatening letters from the TV licensing people telling me i'm breaking the law. Despite the fact that when we changed to DD we told them it was my license and I received a letter acknowledging this!

Thanks to everyone thats been so supportive, I'll keep you updated. ;-)

I think the moral of the tale is always read a document before signing it.

Yep it is but easier said than done especially when stressed by something like this. Not everyone would think about reading what you are signing 99% of people would just sign thinking they have no choice. Bully tactics.

Thanks for the up date and please let us know how you get on as this and the other thread will more than likely help others in the future.

Please could we have an update on this? I hope very much that the reptiles in question crawled back into their hole, but it would be good to know that.
