How to XBOX Live for first time

Options
My DS has an Xbox 360 and wants to go LIVE.

Our house is a very old converted barn with walls thicker than my brain!

Most of the house receives wifi from the study at the other end of the house to the Xbox. We don't think DS can get wifi in his room

He has a normal BT phone socket next to his Xbox.

I'm not sure where to start or what to buy, could some kind soul please point me in the general direction, a read of the old threads on here just tied me up in knots!

Our router is an ADSL Gateway Wireless G from Linksys.

TIA.

Couple of things to think about:
    1) could you move the router into son's room? Could then attach the xbox either wired or wirlessly.
    2) you could get "homeplug" network adapters - that transmit the network through power sockets
    3) could look into getting some kind of wireless bridge/extender - quite techie
    4) could run a cable between the router and the xbox - in the walls, under carpet etc

    1. If I moved the router to his room, I wouldn't be able to connect the PC's I don't think? Could I have another router in his room or would I need two BT lines?
    2. I don't know if homeplug would 'reach' through the walls or have I misunderstood how they work.
    3. Sounds interesting, can you elaborate.
    4. That is just too far and really the walls are a no go!

Home plugs work by using the mains power as your network.

What you do is plug an ethernet cable from the router into one home plug, and an ethernet cable from the xbox into the other home plug and ta da they are networked :D

Get good quality ones though ;)

    Thank you that looks perfect.

So, I buy two of those and what cables will I need to plug the plug into the Xbox and the plug into the router (I'm hoping I have that right!).

You should get at least 1 ethernet cable with the product. You'll then need to buy 1 more.

The homeplugs above will suffice, but you shouldn't need to spend that much for on a pair of homeplugs.

Does anyone currently use a brand of homeplugs which they can recommend?

Doesn't the 360 come bundled with an ethernet cable, too?

you would be better extending the range of your wireless router with Linksys WRE54G Wireless-G Range Extender than using Home plugs and would give a far better coverage for any further additional users for half the price

THanks, would this really push the signal through the walls? They are 4ft thick in places and the distance from Gateway to Xbox is about 25meters as the crow flies!

Could you test by moving the router to where the extender would be positioned?
