Camping advice needed!!

  • In my opinion, there is nothing that spoils the joy of camping more than being cold at night. Especially if it's your first time. If you want to camp in October you will need to borrow kit for an electric hookup and heater.

For torches we swear by, Shake torches we bought on Ebay for £3 each inc p+p, no need for batteries.

Try erecting the tent in your garden for the first time, it saves time and embarrassment when you get to your site.

When you unpack the tent take note of how it was packed, as you will need to pack it back into the bag in a similar fashion.

Enjoy, we've been camping for the last ten years and still love it :)

  • I can thoroughly recommend https://www.pentewan.co.uk - we have stayed there twice. The site is right on the beach. Fairly low key club house type thing. It's not all singing all dancing but it is the most perfect location. We have been twice when the kids aged from 4 to 15 and they love it. Really close to lost gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project. Lovely little put about 20 metres away. We all love it and will be going back many times in the future.

    HOW BIZARRE!!!

I was actually looking at those sites yesterday, although I was more drawn to the Heligan woods one, but I think they are just up the road from each other anyway..........what a weird world we live in!!!

I just want to say a MASSIVE thanks to everyone who has responded to this post, we will definately be going camping, and I am trying to gather together some very basic equipment so it can be soon!!!

HUGEST EVER THANKS to cumbriamale who sent me the booklets, it cost you an absolute fortune to post them, so I am truly truly grateful, they will get read well!!!

Try your local freecycle group - we have lots of people offering all sorts on ours. Camping is great fun, just take lots of blankets if you think it will be cold.
  • I went camping for a few days in August for the first time with my other half (he's been camping since a toddler) and absolutely loved it :)

We took basics too which included airbed, sleeping bag, chairs, single stove, frying pan (bacon & eggs, mmmm), lantern, torch. Also took plenty of woolies as although it was Summer we were in the Langdales and it was freezing one night so glad for my woolie hat :D Also took a stereo to listen to. Only thing I would learn from my first experience was forgetting to shut the 'door' when sat outside with the lantern on at night - I got my first mossie bite in 32 years that night, ouch!!
  • Love camping, go all the time, camping and caravan temp holiday sites. £5 a night but you need your own loo.

Go with an open mind and don't be afraid to ask for help from people on site. If you approach them with "we are new" they will fall over themselves to help you. It is their hobby and passion and they will love to convert you.

    Enjoy.

I would have loved to stay at the Heligan site - my six year old would have been fine there but my 16 year old stepson would have been a nightmare. The Lost Gardens of Heligan was the most fantastic place I have ever visited (and I have travelled quite well having spent a decade in the travel industry) personally I think that it was much better than the Eden Project but that is probably because I have a strong passion for local food and they are really into that and in particular heritage varieties. They have a website but can't remember what it is at the moment. As they are run by the same people I would say that it is fatastic aswell but I think that if you have older children then the facilities are better at Pentewan. They are only about 5 minutes apart by car and I'm sure I read that if you stay at one you can use the facilities ta the other (best check that out though).

I hope that you have a fantastic time wherever you go - we got our campervan about four years ago (we take a tent too for the kids) and had never camped before and now I am totally hooked on it. We did three weeks touring in Scotland last year, we've been to France and as I mentioned before Pentewan twice. I love the fact that everyone is happy to walk around in their PJ's with their hair a mess and no make up. As someone mentioned before there is always someone willing to help out or give advice - it is a real community thing that many people don't experience in their own communities.
