    Hi,

Our family only started camping last year (borrowed tent) and enjoyed it so much, we bought a tent!!

However, would suggest that for items such as cookers, fridge, tables/chairs, try borrowing from friends/relatives before you take the plunge - you may find that you may not need them or need fewer than you thought.

With regard to security, we have had no problems on the three occasions we have been camping, and this included leaving bikes in the tents.

It may be worth considering Haven Holidays (https://www.havenholidays.co.uk) as some of their sites offer camping. We got a bargain in July this year at £7/night for 2 adults and 1 child including electrical hook up and "fun passes" for the swimming pool/entertainment (note that we only booked the week ahead - we did get the good weather though!!).

In the South West, they have sites at Exmouth, Burnham and Perran Sands (Newquay) that take tents.

    Hope this helps.
  • I have a Camping and Caravanning Club Big Sites Book which is updated every 2 years. I still have the previous one which is yours for the asking.

It is worth joining up, maybe wait till next year, £30 for the year but we pay between £6-8 a night to camp on the Holiday site meets.

We had our fortnight in Skegness this August on a CCC Holiday meet. This was on a commercial site, We paid £6 a night the tents on the other side of the string fence paid the commercial site £17.50 a night.:D

WOW - that would be great, do you want me to send you a postal order to cover the postage?? PM me with your details!

I know UKcampsite was mentioned above but you might want to go straight to the section where you can search for campsites and reviews

    www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites

They also have a forum discussing sites, equipment and anything to do with camping.

Last weekend we went on a rally with them, cost was £6.50 per unit (no matter how many people/dogs/gazebos etc) per night without electric hook up.

  • I'm actually really looking forward to it actually, have been looking for somewhere for the October half term, my mom thinks I'm mad cos she's convinced it'll be too cold, but I'll see what the weather is supposed to be before I make a definate decision!!

Thanks very much to Cumbrian Male for sending me the booklets, I look forward to having a read through, I am so grateful!!

    Cheers everyone!!

We just camped last weekend without electric and it was very cold at night. We have really good sleeping bags, went to bed with socks on, hubby with a hat as he is bald and wearing fleeces on top of our pyjamas/joggers. Also pulled the cord round the top of the bags so that it comes in around your shoulders. Once we had done all that we were lovely and warm. Lots of other campers said they had electric hook up and a fan heater or convector heater.

So, essential equipment is something to sleep on, airbed, camp bed or foam mat. Then its something to keep you warm, best thing for that is a good sleeping bag as your body heats the space around you, if you use a duvet your back and shoulders will get cold. Look on the forums at ukcampsite as they are always posting bargains due to it being the end of the season.

After that you might need something to cook on, ie a gas stove. Cooking equipment etc.

Take a look at this checklist which might help you decide what else you need

  • Don't forget to take a good torch, a tin opener and warm clothes in case it's cold at night.
