By offering such wonderful and informed advice I am considering putting myself forward as the fridge magnet Tsar, I should be able to manage with a staff of less than 50, and a personal salary (for 1 day a week) of circa £175k.

When organisations spend tens of millions of pounds, it is normal that some of the money is "wasted". This is also the case in the private sector. In addition, it is normal for people to disagree with some decisions of a council. That's the reason for democracy. If the local residents don't want money spent on fridge magnets, the local residents can remove the councillors who are responsible.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

That would only work if the system was closer to the American one, where when a new admistration comes in to power, the dept heads are all replaced with ones more in sympathy with the new leaders.0 -
It's not just councils. There is a collective insanity at a particular level of middle management, where the most bizarre things are not just accepted as normal, they're actually encouraged.
This is a genuine, only slightly edited, e-mail sent round my business today with a red flag importance notification.Dear Colleagues'
The weather across Europe is currently very hot, many people are opening windows to try and get fresh cool air into the building. Today there was an incident at our XXXXXX site where an employee decided to open a window which was higher than their normal reach. Although provided with a small step up unit the employee decided to stand on a chair to reach the window subsequently they fell off the chair, catching their head and had to go to hospital for medical treatment.
Please note:
This kind of behavior is not acceptable under any circumstances.
It is important that you only complete tasks for which you have successfully completed the relevant Task and Health & Safety training.
Always use proper equipment and safe behaviors as per your training.
If you require assistance call your line manager or myself for advice.
If you have colleagues who do not have email access please advise them immediately.
Please note similar notifications are being sent out to all company sites today
A full safety alert will follow within the next few days at which time I will be required to asses the impact to our site.

A lot of Health and Safety leaves me cold. DH works in airline safety - common sense and it is very clear what the requirements are. Stops planes falling out of the sky and people dying. Very sensible.
But then you get examples like Julieq's or the one I read of recently where pantos stopped throwing sweets into the audience in case a child was injured by flying chewies and I'm left scratching my head. Never been an incident of a child being hit by a flying sweet and taken to hospital or a serious speight of conker related incidents? No matter. There might be. So boxes have to be ticked. And fun activities have to be stopped.
Plus you can never legislate for the stupidity of some humans. Hence the Darwin awards. If someone wants to try and stand on a chair with wheels on to reach something, or put a ladder up on sheet ice, or something equally daft, no amount of H&S box ticking is going to help them.
Welcome back julieq btw. Long time, no see. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.
