You'd have thought that in London (Cockfosters) my son would be able to find a suitable job to fund him through Uni. Well its proving a problem he's been out and about giving in CV's etc but after six weeks still nothing. Any tips? He is willing to travel on the Tube does'nt have to be that near up to 40mins away. Any leads gratefully accepted.

Has he had his CV checked by the University careers service? They really helped with writing mine.
Failing that, what about agencies etc? A lot of shops will also be recruiting for Christmas soon, so how about trying those?0 -
For student type jobs CVs are a bit superfluous - best to just look as tidy & enthusiastic as possible & go knocking on doors. Also, there's a lot of agency work around at the moment - don't sign up with more than 1 or 2 initially but give them a couple of days to come up with something before trying others.0

What about th emobile phone shops, like Carphone, Orange etc, they'll be recruiting now so they can have fully trained employees in time for Christmas!!Treat others as you would like to be treated :A0

Was shopping at Marks at London Colney and they were having a job fair . I think location wise it matches your criteria and from what I believe Xmas staff , usually get offered the chance to become permanant . They are open today , so might be worth following it up . Good luck0

How about his Students' Union? I work as security (bouncer!) at my uni bar and earn enough to pay for food and the bills each month. Plus can fit hours around lectures.Little man arrived 13 Dec 20120

I used to work at a hotel near there (Hadley Wood) when I was a student - West Lodge Park. This might be a good time to ask for work as they will be losing the students who have been working there whilst home for the summer. there are also pubs, restaurants and recruitment agencies in Potters Bar, a shortish bus ride up the road.3-6 Month Emergency Fund #14: £9000 / £10,0000

Get him to go to restaraunts and be a waiter. The tips are always handy. As a restaraunt manager I know how much waiting staff make and to be honest you can earn more working the weekend in a restaraunt then some people in an office earn in a week.
As an example one member of staff just earned £130 cash and £40 credit card tips on saturday alone + wages
Now I am not saying eveybody gets all this money but I tell you if more students did this instead of working in a phone shop or stacking shelves then their debts would be considerably smaller.
I have just got my sister a job and in 2 weeks before term started she earned £400 in wages and £700 in tips.0 -

When are the careers service running, will it be term time? Or can my daughter get her CV checked out now? We updated it yesterday (and I deleted the outright lies) but it is still not perfect.
Mind you at 16 she went into rebel mode. I kept encouraging her (OK some nagging involved) to do stuff to enhance her CV but basically she has done as little as possible over the last 2 years so apart from the exam results, everything on it is over 2 years old.
