their fees - outrageous amounts - my solicitor does MUCH more important work for me in a purchase, yet, he gets a fraction of what EA's charge.
  • Funnily enough, the biggest issue I had (when looking for a house) was the financial advances EA seemed to feel they have to make. I found that each time I went into an EA office, they were more interested in trying to sell their financial advice (advisor) than their houses !!!

I was quite specific in what I wanted (parking, garden, at least two bedrooms etc.) and it just seemed to be too much trouble for them to be bothered to try and find me a house, as it was so much easier for me to increase my budget - by speaking to their Finanacial Advisor, who they were sure would be able to give me a more 'realistic' budget for my area. Needless to say, I used my own Independant advisor, and managed to find a house :D within my price range, without their help (long story, totally O/T so will stop there).

i have been into so many estate agents offices outside of my own home town and asked for details of how to get to a house to do a viewing - and can they be bothered ? is there anyone in the office who can read a map ? haven't you got SATNAV they bleated ? lazyitis, that's what it is
  • All estate agents are liars, lazy, smarmy, drive flash cars, wear cheap suits etc etc

Just like all Accountants are boring, all coppers are bent, all black people have rhythm, all blondes are dumb and all the French love garlic....

There's nothing like perpetuating the stereotype is there?
My home is usually the House Buying, Renting and Selling Forum where I can be found trying to (sometimes unsucessfully) prove that not all Estate Agents are crooks. With 20 years experience of Sales/Lettings and having bought and sold many of my own properties I've usually got something to say ;)
    Ignore......check!
  • What I like best is them assuring me my sofas will fit in the front door of the flat I am buying...they know this for a fact as they have just cleared flat I am buying (was managed and rented out) and they described in detail how they got rid og the old sofa in there, on its side blah blah blah

So walking past today surprised to see it still in situ:j

A more interesting and pertinant question is whether a large proportion of estate agents are liars, lazy, smarmy, etc. For example, by comparison to other professions.

Although I would probably say 'liars', I dislike EAs for the how they encourage you to pay over the odds.

Back in 2004, I saw a flat that looked nice - until I realised it was under a powerline (directly under it) and a sewage works was near. The EA kept on pestering me to lie about my income (you can borrow as much as you want). I'm clued up and told him to go away (he still rang about 6 times), but many buyers will fall for this.

I guess I would say they are 'deceitful'. Although, I know it doesn't apply to everyone.

But the real question is why do house sellers and buyers keep using EAs? They are plenty of websites that cut EAs out!
  • I'm not a big fan of estate agents, they get on my nerves and unfortunately I have to deal with them on a regular basis. They get hacked off when I act for their clients, mostly because they wanted the mortgage business themselves:rotfl: , and also I am quite straight to the point, assertive and downright bossy when it comes to them removing a property off the market. I also tend to snap when they put undue pressure on my clients. Only last week I had to ring some stroppy moo up in Bristol and tell her to treat my clients with more respect and stop putting pressure on them - all the clients wanted was a second viewing and because it hadn't gone to offer in less than a week they were treated like muck on the floor.

I'd like to strangle most estate agents, they really do my head in. I don't know who the hell they think they are most of the time:confused: . I'll be glad when more and more of them start disappearing into the woodwork and people start selling their properties privately on the internet.

    Rant over:D .

Thinking they know better that you do. We have registered for information with a couple in our town and have been extremely specific about what we are looking for. One EA rang me on Friday with a house which had most of our criteria but was in totally the wrong part of town. I said I wasn't interested, but he kept saying how nice the house was - duh said I "but it's in the catchment area for the worst secondary school in town - perhaps the current owners have discovered this and decided to move!!"
