What do people hate most about EAs?

I would say it was lying.

I'm not one of these people who believe that all EAs are inherently evil. Though that Foxtons documentary shows that there are deeply ingrained problems in the industry, which something should be done about.

I'd agree that "lying" is a very annoying characteristic, but "fraud" would get my vote.

I agree that they are not all that bad. It is interesting that they always seem to appear on a league table of most hated proffessions. Last survey I saw suggested they were at number two, below traffic wardens.

One bad apple doesn't mean the whole bushel is bad. However, for EAs, it seems that the proportion of bad apples is much more than one per bushel, and that's enough to give the profession as a whole a bad name. What other professions would you say lie and cheat more (on average) than estate agents?

    Debt collectors.

Lawyers (when doing debt collection work and making false statements about plans of action).

The amount of work they do for how much we end up having to give them.

They can be so patronising, both to seller and buyer.

Their tendancy to perform satanic rituals after every successful sale.

I think for me it's that sense of mistrust - wanting to believe that they are being straight with you but knowing that they can never give you totally impartial advice because of the way they work with commissions and incentives and so always wondering 'why are they telling me this...what are they hoping to get out of it?'
  • Ditto - only just had my first encounters of the estate agent kind (from a sellers point of view) and am already thinking I need a degree in psychology to read what they tell you!
  • i have always had a great experience with estate agents. the one selling my house was excellent house sale agreed within 2 weeks of it going on the market.

the fact that they can't even answer any questions, however basic, you have about a house when they are showing you around (eg. "is this a private road?", "where is the LPG tank?") - yet witter on and on and on (to the extent that you can't even concentrate on what you're looking at) about kitchen doors and loo seats like that's going to sell the house to you.
