Every phone will have it's problems. Apple basically have only one phone out rather than the myriad that other manufacturers have, so the media only have one model to target (yes there is currently the 3GS and 4 but there are many similarities between the two.)

And the media loves trying to take the giants down a peg or two (see MS)

If you google any of the current smartphones they all have some issues as do all the standard phones.

In fact that's true of pretty much any product.

Your friend had a particularly bad experience. I had an 3G from launch until the 4 was released. Other than the very occasional glitch it was great (and every phone I've had has had the occasional problem.)

My mates 3G went sluggish after updating the software. She restored to factory settings and now it is fine.

As I posted before, disabling Spotlight indexing seems to fix it. By all accounts it didn't happen in the betas, only the official release, so something has gone wrong somewhere.

It wouldn't be the first time, I beta tested Windows Me (remember that?) and it was fine in beta and RC (well as fine as Win9x could ever be) and was unbearable when it was declared RTM.

It's a question of numbers. You've read thousands of posts, but there are millions of iPhone users, the vast majority of whom are not having problems (they're actually using their iPhones rather than posting about them on websites). I had a 3G for 2 years and it was the best phone I've ever had. My iPhone 4 is even better.
Other people's experiences may vary, but I doubt so many people would be buying iPhones if everyone thought they were junk.

I think you will find the vast majority have suffered problems, they just sit in silence waiting for the next fix/update. No-one likes to admit that they paid £400-£500 for something so problematic!

If it was a cheap phone, you could live with and accept the problems. When you pay that much for a phone (and you do pay for it, even if you got it free on a contract), you expect a certain standard. It's seems to me you do not get what you pay for with the iPhone.

Just to clarify, I did own an iPhone 3Gs. I personally didn't have any major problems apart from a few dropped calls and poor reception so I'm not totally anti-iPhone. However, I used my iPhone as a phone and that was about it. I think I downloaded 2 apps and had about 4 songs on it so I didn't exactly put it through it's paces.

Every phone is affected but not everyone will suffer from the problem.

With good signal strength it's possible you won't see dropped calls, lower signal strengths will.

I suspect that most of the population in the countries that initially got it have a lot if buyers in urban areas with masts left right and centre and many of the rural people have such bad reception anyway that they see it as par for the course.

Edit: Also bear in mind that people are far more likely to complain if there is a problem than will bother to post on a forum that they are not.
  • Roger,

Boo_star has hit the nail on the head with their edit on their post; people complain rather than congratulate. 3,000,000 iPhones sold in the first month, but how many of those people have complained? There will be those that sit and wait for an update, but anyone who bought a computer with Vista did exactly the same thing (which is why the Windows 7 family upgrade pack was so cheap on release).

The thing is that people still bought computers, even though Vista had.... issues.... and people will still by Apple products. There are cheaper MP3 players than the iPod, but the Nano sells like a storm. The iPod Touch is being updated and no doubt it will be on everyones Christmas list. The iPad doesn't have a front facing camera for FaceTime, but no doubt that's coming next year.

So I think the only thing I can really say to sum up your posts is:

If you don't want an iPhone 4, don't buy one. If you bought one and you don't like it, bring it back (clicky).
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.

Later ones are but not the original 1st Gen. I got mine new in August 2008 just before the 2nd Gen came out but it is finished with updates sadly.

It is, according to those on Apple forums, capable of running cut down iOS4 as given to the second gen iPod but....

I suspect Oscar is talking about an updated model, not software updates :)
  • The problem is the iOS4 software is too powerful for the 3G.

Just finished a call with tech support who have advised me that there should be an update in the next two weeks to sort the problems out.

Still incredibly slack that it's taken this long and that they haven't released a statement.

According to Consumer Direct, Apple are in breach of "The Supply of goods and services act (1982)

Those that have experienced these problems (UK/Europe) should explain this in writing to the following address: Customer Relations, Apple Operations Europe, Hollyhill, Cork, Ireland

If you want a work around for now try setting up the phone as new or try this:

    1) Do a backup of the iPhone using iTunes
    2) Do a restore of the iPhone (using the backup you made in step #1)
    3) Do a reset ("Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings")
