That's for a refund, on I assume a recently bought item? I imagine that if you returned it for a repair rather than refund, they'd not ask for the instructions etc.

Returned for an exchange, repair was never offered. Wanted to pay more and upgrade to better model but they wouldnt let me.

If its a shops own brand then there usually pretty good with returns without a receipt as its obvious you got it from there, but they usually only do an exchange or credit note. You normally always only get a refund on items with receipts.

Surely the sensible thing to do is to NOT throw away receipts, get a box and put every receipt in there even if you dont think you'll need it. Sort through it every couple of months and throw away out of date receipts.

Nowadays if im buying clothing or electricals from a supermarket i always put them through the till seperate to my shopping, so i get a dedicated receipt, and so its easier to find in my receipt box as i dont have to look through the 100's of grocery items to find it. I also always use my card, so i have a 2nd proof of purchase as i can always show my bank statement, which i have had to do before when i misplaced a receipt for a very expensive item.

Im speaking from experience here. Then you will always have a receipt for a refund, exchanges, warranties etc etc.

Asdas policy on faulty items is a joke!

We bought a camera - clearly faulty took it back to store for refund/repair with reciept refused a refund as i didnt have the box! I mean how many boxes am i supposed to keep! We have a 50" telly so i'm supposed to keep that box too! not likely x x x

Returns under guarantee only need a receipt (only for proof of date of purchase) - you do not need the box. It might be worth contacting the manufacturer about it, and also telling them that Asda have refused to honour the guarantee due to no box, and ask if they could do something.

I had a dress from asda, got age 6-7 for my then 4 yr old daughter, washed it twice & it had shrunk so much it no longer fit her. Took it back & the woman tried to argue it with me. I walked over to the shelf picked up an age 2-3 in the exact same dress & said now tell me it's not shrunk, they were identical in size almost, she looked said umm maybe it has a little you didn't follow washing instructions & tumble dried it. I said I did not & checked the lable lol you could tumble it anyway. she no longer had any arguments left & gave me a refund. oddly enough I didn't want the same dress.
We don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.

I went to ASDA earlier to return some shorts bought for my husband in early June, all tags still in tact and with receipt but told that they now have a 28 day return policy so I'm stuck with them !

Asda are not allowed to rewrite consumer laws just to suit them .
If an item is faulty and its within a reasonable amount of time you can return the item for a full refund WITHOUT the receipt .As for the packaging you can return it in a plastic sack ,it makes no difference to your rights .If they insist on proof of purchase ,this does not have to be a receipt.
If Asda says otherwise then they are breaking the law.
If an item isnt faulty but you have changed your mind or it doesnt fit etc then you have no rights when it comes to returning the item atall But most stores will allow this just to keep good PR .
  • The problem with not having the receipt and returning something to a supermarket with a CC statement is that the item I'm returning is say £9.99 but my CC statement says £64.20 as it was purchased with several other items. In fact I've taken a statement with an entry for the correct amount before and been told I could have purchased anything for £9.99 and it wasn't proof that I'd purchased the specific item I was returing.

I was told by Asda that they can obtain the transaction code and then trace the transaction on their system.

If you ever have trouble returning an item just contact Consumer direct ,they are very helpful and can inform the store of your rights ,its amazing how many people in retail havent got a clue and actually think they are in the right :/
