Is anyone else having a welcome drink?
It's something our hotel has included in the list of things to have and OH doesn't think we should as he has always bought his own drink when he has gone to weddings, I'd like to be able to make the meal so that no one has to pay for any of their drinks except for any extra that the 2 glasses with the meal. It's only for 30 people
If you are having a welcome drink are you having any canapes or the like to go with it?

We're having a welcome drink of bucks fizz, no canapes or anything though. I thought it was pretty standard to have a welcome drink these days. They'llbe handed out as we're having photos etc.
We're also paying for half a bottle of wine per guest during the Wedding Breakfast and a glass of sparkling wine for the toasts.
To be honest, ive never been to a wedding where theres been no welcome drinks. What matters most is how well you walk through the fire0 -
the welcome drinks tend to be something fairly girly - pimms, bucks fizz, etc. men often buy a beer or similar instead, and this is something you might want to bear in mind when you make your final decision on it! we will be getting something like drinks for 80% of people, or if we're feeling rich we'll get the whole lot and then there will be a few spare.
we're doing welcome drinks, and i do think its fairly 'standard' although that doesn't mean you have to do it!!!0 -
We're having welcome drinks, not decided what just yet but possibly offering sparkling wine, and elderflower & sparking water for those who don't want to drink at that point. We're also having canapes, which is part of our venue's package for us and so isn't costing us any extra.
I don't expect that'll be for too long though, since the marriage is at 2.30pm in a nearby church and we want to be sitting down to the meal by 5.30pm, so with the ceremony (1 hour) and photos (another hour max, prob less for most of the guests though) that gives us up to an hour to get to the venue and have some mingly time before the wedding breakfast.0 -

We had them! We paid for two per head.
Our venue let us serve a mixture so we had glasses of sparkling wine, beer and orange juice brought round. The beer went down well with all the guys since it was a hot afternoon and we were all outside!
Didn't bother with canapes as they were expensive and people were going to get a three course dinner a couple of hours later.

we have decided on printing "have a drink on us" vouchers that will be handed to every guest at our reception and they can redeem it at the bar for a drink of their choice, we are footing the bill for all drinks during our meal also0

were having sparkling wine or orange juice also half a bottle of wine with the meal per person.
every wedding ive ever been to has had welcome drinks.
that doesnt mean that you have to though0 -
We've put £250 behind the bar for a welcome drink. We wanted people to be able to chose as we never enjoy the welcome drinks at weddings
We've also told them to bill us if it goes over £250, but we trust our mates to only get one drink

We're going to have reception drinks, this will last about an hour and will not include canapes and this will give us time to go and get our photos done, then we have our wedding breakfast, again we will provide the drinks. I didn't see the point of having canapes when we'd be eating a great big meal shortly after! Once the speeches are done the room is going to be changed and a pay bar will be added and everyone can buy their own in the evening. I expect there will be plenty of wine left on the tables anyway as this has always been the case at other weddings we have attended. We are having quite similar numbers, about 30 to 40!0
